Latest UC Browser 9.5 (Signed Java Version) Modified to Remove the Virtual Keypad On Samsung, LG and Other Touchscreen Phones

Featured

I did a post a while ago explaining how to modify Opera Mini’s jad file to hide the unneeded touch keypad that displays at the bottom of the screen on some touchscreen phones. The post included a link to the modified Opera Mini. I received a request asking for a copy of the latest signed Java version of UC Browser modified to hide the keypad. The process for modifying the UC Browser or any other Java app is exactly the same as what was described in the original … Continue reading

How To Hide the Opera Mini 8 Virtual Keypad On Samsung, LG and Other Touchscreen Phones

Featured

When the Java ME version of the Opera Mini Browser is running on many touch screen phones, an unnecessary virtual keypad appears at the bottom of the screen (image above left). The keypad wastes space, looks ugly and isn’t needed with touch aware apps like Opera Mini. The keypad is not part of Opera Mini. It’s something your phone adds because it doesn’t recognize that Opera Mini is optimized for touch. There are several ways to get rid of the virtual keypad … Continue reading

Updated: How to View the Full Version of Sites in Opera Mini and Other Mobile Browsers

Featured

Originally published in 2009, this post is updated regularly with the latest workarounds for viewing the desktop versions of mobile sites in mobile browsers. Last update 12-Jan-2014: Added reader-contributed workarounds for Google Search and Google Image Search. Removed non-working Yahoo Mail links. One of the biggest frustrations of using the web with mobile browsers is web sites that force them to use dumbed down mobile versions.  I have nothing against mobile sites, obviously. I build them and I write about them here at … Continue reading

A Linux User’s Nokia Lumia 920 Review – Part 3: Transferring Files Between Windows Phone 8 and Ubuntu

Featured

@Nokia_Connects has loaned me a Nokia Lumia 920 to try out. This is the first time I’ve used a Windows Phone device for more than a few minutes. The Lumia runs Windows Phone 8 While there are a few things I don’t like about WP8, I’m enjoying the overall user experience. It’s refreshingly different than anything else and fast, fluid and, for the most part, very intuitive. As a Linux user I wondered if it would be possible to connect the … Continue reading

Updated: Download Old Opera Mini Java, PalmOS and BlackBerry Versions Here

Featured

Opera Mini updates are usually a good thing. They include bug fixes and often, new features. But for a few users, usually with old or obscure phones, the new version doesn’t work as well as the old one or work at all. On the Opera Mini User forum there is a recurrent theme of users, trying a released version and insisting that one of older ones, was better. There’s a sticky post on the forum with links to some old versions but it’s far from … Continue reading

Mobile Bookmarklets Page Updated

Featured

I’ve done a long overdue cleanup of my Mobile Bookmarklets page at o.yeswap.com, which has over 40 mobile bookmarklets and instructions for using them. I retested all the bookmarklets and found six that weren’t working. I was able to fix all of them but two. I removed the non-working bookmarklets which were for services (Google Buzz and Mobleo.net) which no longer exist. Here are the updated bookmarklets. If you use any of these delete them from you bookmarks and reinstall from o.yeswap.com. Page Rank – Displays the … Continue reading

How To Reset the Nokia E6 and Re-install the OS

Featured

To my horror the Nokia E6 review unit that WOMWorldNokia sent me seems to have developed a fault and has been spontaneously rebooting every ten minutes or so since yesterday morning.  I really like the phone and hoped to get a few more days use out of it before I have to send it back.  I’ve been successful in the past at fixing misbehaving Symbian phones with a soft or hard reset so I set about trying … Continue reading

Opera Mini Secret Codes

Featured

Opera Mini has some special commands that you enter in the address bar like a URL but without the “http://”. Many of them return information that’s probably only of interest to Opera’s developers but a couple are actually very useful. My favorite is config: which opens Opera Mini’s Power User Settings page where you can tweak  many browser settings like the timeout and whether the browser should make phone numbers clickable. See my post Opera Mini’s Hidden Power User Menu for … Continue reading

Solving Opera Mini and UC Browser Connection Problems

Featured

Configuring GSM phones so that data aware Java applications like gMail, UC Browser and Opera Mini can connect to the Internet is a total disaster. Opera Mini is an amazing mobile browser that gives almost any phone iPhone like Internet capabilities. But many people have trouble getting it to work. They download it from mini.opera.com, it installs without error but when they try to run it they get the error “Failed to connect to the internet“. The same thing often … Continue reading
