Updated: Trying Out Firefox Mobile 1.0 For Maemo

Firefox Mobile – Truncated header background Update: A couple of days after I originally wrote this piece, Firefox Mobile RC3 went golden as Firefox Mobile 1.0.  As far as I can tell their were no code changes between RC3 and 1.0 so the content of this piece is relevant to the initial this the first non-Beta release of Firefox Mobile.  There have however been updates to some of the extensions most notably “Weave”.  I’ve also found the elusive “Tabs From … Continue reading

N900 MicroB Browser Basics

Every new phone has a learning curve, however brief.  When I got my N900 I expected to have to put a fair amount of effort into figuring out how to use the device.  After all this was not only a new handset for me but I’d never used  Maemo before. Plus, I’d heard that the N900 was a geeky device, not really suited for normal mobile users. OK, maybe I am a geek, but I think I got up to … Continue reading

Nokia N900 First Impressions

Nokia’s WOMworld has sent me a Nokia N900 to review. Over the next week or two, I intend to cover this groundbreaking device in depth, focusing first on the N900’s Web browsing capabilities using the built in MicroB browser plus Firefox Mobile and any other third party browsers I can find. I’m not sure how long I get to keep the N900 but if I have time I’ll also highlight Web apps that are particularly useful on the device and … Continue reading

Mobile Industry Incompetence Keeps A Two Year Old Post Relevant

A post I wrote over two years ago about configuring GPRS settings for Java apps, “Solving Opera Mini Connection Problems” has consistently been the most viewed and most commented on WapReview.  I consider its popularity an indictment of what a bad job the industry, particularly mobile operators and handset makers have done in making it easy for users to setup data and run applications on their phones. In looking it over I noticed some broken links and references to ancient … Continue reading

PinStack – Not Just For BlackBerrys Anymore

Pinstack, one of the oldest (founded 2004) and largest (over 300,000 registered members) BlackBerry user forums has changed it’s focus. Sometime in the last year or so the site gained Android, iPhone, Windows Mobile, Palm and other smartphone sub-forums and changed its byline from “Where BlackBerry professionals Connect!” to “Smartphone Professionals Alliance!”. PinStack has always been a very active and well run forum with many knowledgeable and active users, so as someone who is interested in all mobile platforms I … Continue reading
