QFS.mobi - Easy Anonymous Mobile File Sharing

Quick File Share Mobile

File sharing services like Rapidshare around since the dawn of the Internet. They let you anonymously upload a file that can then be downloaded by anyone with Web access. While these services have gotten a bad name because they are widely used for illegal sharing of copyrighted material, they also make it possible for non-technical users to share self generated and legally sharable content like their own wedding videos without the need to install software or resort to kludges like emailing multiple 10 MB attachments

However, none of the mainstream file sharing services are at all mobile friendly. They are ad and subscription funded and interpose countdown timers, interstitials, deceptive links and various dirty tricks designed to get users to click on ads or pay to subscribe, which removes most of the impediments.

Enter Quick File Share Mobile (qfs.mobi). a free mobile file hosting service with a clean mobile friendly interface, no timers and a minimum of ads. It lets you upload, host and share files (up to 10MB) from your mobile phone. Files can be downloaded by anyone or password protected.

After uploading a file you are given a unique download link and the option to share the link by SMS or Email. Files not downloaded within 30 days will be deleted.

You can upload from any phone whose browser supports the html input tag's "file" attribue (which enables browse for file functionality). Including the iPhone, Windows Mobile, most Nokias and Opera Mini, Bolt or UCWEB (on phones with JSR 75 support). Surprisingly, browse for file is not supported by any version of the Android browser. A workaround for Android users is to use Opera Mini 4.2 but you would think a modern, open-source, smartphone operating system like Android would support such a basic html function. m.DrJukka.com - Download Y-Browser, Y-Tasks and More

DrJulla Mobile Site

Dr. Jukka Silvennoinen, aka DrJukka, is a prolific developer of free Symbian smartphone applications for S60 3rd and 5th edition phones. His best known apps are Y-Browser, a powerful file manager and Y-Tasks, a great collection of system utilities that includes a task manager, file association editor, crash monitor and a font viewer/manager. I’ve found both of these programs indispensable on my N95. Neither of them are available in the Ovi Store, unfortunately.

You can download Y-Browser and Y-Tasks and the rest of DrJukk’s apps, which include an  inclinometer, profile and theme schedulers, a fake SMS sender and 50 JavaScript puzzles and games which DrJukka has ported to the Nokia WRT widget platform directly to your S60 phone from DrJukka’s new mobile site, m.drjukka.com

Except for the widgets all of DrJukka’s applications on the mobile site are ad supported. If you can’t take the ads, alternate unsigned, self signed or older ad free versions are available from DrJukka’s desktop site.

Betavine.mobi - Where Are All the Apps?

Betavine.mobi homepage

The huge international operator Vodafone supports and hosts a mobile developer community and forum on the web at betavine.net.  About a year ago Vodafone added game and application downloads to the site and re-launched Betavine as a community for both developers and users.  At the same time they created a mobile edition of the app portal at betavine.mobi

Developers submit new mobile games and applications to Betavine which are then available for download on the web and at betavine.mobi.  Users who download the apps can submit feedback to developers using either the mobile or full web sites.

This seems like a great idea, users get to try new applications and developers get valuable feedback and exposure to an audience of millions of Vodafone users.  There is no cost to developers or users and there don't seem to be many restrictions on the sorts of apps that are allowed on the portal.

Betavine.mobi is a 240 px wide fixed width mobile site that looks good on screens of that width but doesn't adapt well to larger or smaller screens.  The site is a little on the heavy side too, with pages up to 150 KB in size, too large for phones with the Openwave or Motorola MIB browsers.

I was really surprised to find only 216 apps and games on Betavine.  The files are filtered by device type, so only 130 of the 216 were  available for download to my N95. The apps are organized into categories (Games, Travel, "Keeping in Touch", Health and Fitness, Music Photos, Sport, Business and A-Z)  There is no search but with only 130 downloads it's not a big deal to browse through the categories.  I don't understand the A-Z category, though.  I expected it to contain an alphabetical list of all the downloads but instead it lists only nine apps which don't seem to have anything in common.

Anyone can browse Betavine.mobi but to download you must register with a mobile number (for SMS verification) AND a captcha - more security than necessary for a free download site, IMHO.   On top of that I never got the SMS.  I'm inclined to blame T-Mobile USA for that rather than Betavine.  Receiving international SMS seems to be hit or miss with T-Mobile, but that's another story.  Fortunately I was able to log in  to the mobile site by using my Betavine.net credentials, an email address and password.

The apps on Betavine are a mix of well known ones like Trutap and SocialPlayer that are available elsewhere, demo versions of commercial apps and developer oriented API demos. Betavine.mobi is a nice little app showcase but where is all the content?  I don't understand why there are so few applications and games on the site.  Betavine.mobi is an on-deck site for Vodafone subscribers in Germany,  Spain and the UK which means 70 million potential visitors.  I'm really surprised developers aren't falling all over each other to submit apps to Betavine.

Admittedly there are no paid apps, so no direct revenue opportunity; but shareware, ad-supported and trial commercial apps seem to be accepted.  Why haven't more of the thousands of developers using GetJar submitted their apps to Betavine? Even Phoload, which is only a few moths old, has more aplications.

Any developers out there willing to share with their Betavine experiences?  Is it difficult to submit apps or are they being rejected by Vodafone?

Mjelly Adds Downloads and Mobile Sites

mjelly Home PageFree ringtone site mjelly.com (mobile m.mjelly.com) has branched out.  In addition to its funky collection of sound effects,  old school phone ringers, cartoon and TV themes, rave and metal tones; the site now offers downloadable applications and games and a mobile site directory.

The new content sections are pretty small so far.  Right now mjelly lists  21 app downloads and 54 mobile sites compared with 352 ringtones. But the apps and sites are all well known, high quality ones like Facebook, Mippin, Opera Mini, Shozu and Widsets.  I expect the selection to grow rapidly. Don't go looking for warez though, mjelly is a class act and everything is legitimate.

If you are an application developer or mobile publisher use the Contact Form on the full web version of the site to submit your free app or site.

mjelly has a user rating system for content.  Registration, which is free and instant is not required to browse mjelly and download any of the content.  Registered users can rate and comment on any tone, app or site. By default, listings are sorted by rating but sorting by Newest or Most Popular is just a click away.

There's a lot to like about mjelly, it doesn't have a huge catalog, but the site loads fast, is easy to navigate and looks like a hassle free way to get truly free content for any phone.
