I've been using with Google Voice for a couple of years and it works very well. Texts are delivered immediately and can be viewed as a threaded transcript on the Google Voice web and mobile web sites. Texts sent from the web interfaces appear as coming from your Google Talk number. Recipients can reply to Google Talk texts and their replies go to all your phones.  When someone sends you a text it comes from a 406-NNN-NNN (Montana) number.  If you reply to that number it will come from your Google Voice number and will show up in your Google Voice inbox.  The sender's real number also appears in the body of the message for reference.

I've had mixed results with the voice transcription. It handles common words very well but sometimes stumbles humorously on longer words and proper names. Gustav was transcribed as " the start of" and Yoplait became "at your place". My favorite was "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" which was rendered phonetically as "super caliper she's X P L a delicious". I was generally able to make sense of the transcriptions and the mp3 clip of the actual message was just a click away for the ones I couldn't.

The Google Voice  mobile site has three tabs for Inbox, Contacts and Settings.  Inbox now includes SMS and the Settings tab has some new options; "Do Not Disturb",  "Add Credit" and the ability to toggling call screening, which Google calls  "Call Presentation".  It's an easy site to navigate and use and at 4 KB in size it loads quickly and should work on most phones.

Google Voice is curently only available in the U.S

Webtel.mobi - Place a call

Webtel.mobi offers low cost international calling and texts. For calls, webtel uses a callback system similar to competitors Rebtel and JaJah. You enter the party you're calling's number on the the mobile site and webtel calls you back with the call connected. Calling rates start at 3 cents/minute (plus a 5 cent connection fee). Rates vary among the three services depending on the country pairs involved so you might want to do a little comparison shopping before you pick one. webtel does have the advantage of covering calls between 240 countries which is considerably more than JaJah and RebTel. You can find each service's rates on their desktop sites:

Texting with webtel works similarly to calling, you enter the number and message into a form on the mobile site and webtel sends the text. The SMS's "from" field has your mobile number in it so replies will go directly to your phone. Texting rates start at 3.5 cents per message.

Credit can be purchased in € 5 increments. It's not clear from the webtel site if credit expires and if so how soon. This could be an important consideration for light users.

Mobile Share

Mobile Share

Mobile Share is a simple but potentially handy new service.  It lets you create a personal online contact page,  a simple mobile formatted web page containing your name and phone number. A link on the page lets you share it by sending the URL in a text message. Another link lets the recipient add your name and number to their phone's contacts with a single click.

The SMS sending and add to address book functions are implemented using a couple of less common URI schemes; sms: and  wtai://  which are supported by most phones. A notable exception is the iPhone, which does not support wtai.
