Mobile edition of Colorado Springs and Pueblo Colorado's TV Channel 11 has local news and weather

Denver and Colorado breaking news, weather, sports, local events calendar and entertainment from Denver's sole remaining daily newspaper. The Denver Post has one of the better mobile newspaper sites with over 100 full length articles, most with photos, from the paper's news, sports,business, editorials, entertainment, style and politics sections. The Post's Ski Reports section is impressive with detailed reports from two dozen Rocky Mountain ski resorts.

The Fort Collins Coloradoan newspaper's mobile news site

Local News Weather, News, Sports and Event Calendar from Grand Junction/Montrose Colorado's TV Channel 8. The site has dozens of articles of almost entirely local content and is easy to navigate - except that four of the nine links on the home page; Medical Network, Entertainment, Classifieds and LIFESTYLE lead to a page in the kjct8.com domain containing the message "The content on this page is not viewable on a mobile device" Huh? Why are the links even there then?

The latest news, sports, weather, editorials, obituaries and the ever popular police blotter from Old Greenwich, Connecticut's daily newspaper, the Greenwich Citizen

The Courant claims to be the US's oldest continuously published (since 1764) newspaper. The Hartford Connecticut daily features a mobile edition that has strong local news and sports coverage along with national, international, business, health, home and food sections and your daily horoscope.

The mobile version of the Hearst ownered New Canaan, Connecticut News-Review carries about 20 full-length, text-only items from the Local News, Sports, and Editorials sections along with several columists and the local weather.

Stamford CT is a commuter suburb of about 110,000 inhabitants 45 minutes by train from New York City. The Advocate's mobile news site features local, national, international and business news as well as sports and feature articles from the daily paper.

Mobile news site from Washington, D.C.'s channel 9, WUSA-TV

The Washington Post is widely regarded as one of the two best US newspapers, the other being the New York Times. Compared with the Times, the Post has been slow to develop its web and especially its mobile web presence. Last week the paper took a step to improve it's mobile web offering with a complete redesign of mobile.washington.com

The revamped and expanded site was develeoped with the help of  Norway's MobileTech. It uses browser detection and adaptation to vary layout, page and image sizes to suit everything from basic feature phones to the iPhone. The tabbed top navigation area is attractive and easy to navigate. Content consists of local, national and world news sections plus separate politics, business, local, entertainment and sports pages and a photo gallery.

All sections have been expanded and their are now over 50 full length articles on the mobile site plus items from several of the paper's editorial blogs.

Unlike the New York Times, which is popular worldwide, the majority of the Post subscribers are local to the Washington D.C. metropolitan area where it is the top paper in circulation.  The new mobile site focuses on the Post's strength in local coverage with a local section called "Metro" which has extensive local news coverage including live traffic updates.

Another tradional Post strength is it's coverage of the Washington political scenne whichis reflected in the mobile site's extensive political news coverage and a number of opioniated editorials on national issues and pending legislation.

It's great to finally have a mobile version of the Washinton Post that is finally worthy of the paper's quality and prestige.

First Coast News is the joint web and mobile news site of two Gannett owned Jacksonville, Florida TV stations - WJXX ABC 23 and NBC affiliate WTLV, channel 12.

This Florida daily paper's mobile site has extensive local, national and world news, weather, business and sports coverage with photos. Also editorials, horoscopes, winning lottery numbers, entertainment news and event listings.

WTSP-TV, channel 10 covering Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida.

The mobile version of Tampa Bay Online, the web edition of the Tampa, Florida Tribune. The mobile site contains the full text and photos of dozens of headline stories from the full site.

A great example of a really well designed mobile site. The front page consists of just seven links to the major sections of the site. Most of the sections have their own menus which allow the user to drill down to their area of interest quickly. You will find plenty of local news, business news, feature articles and the obituaries. Sports coverage is minimal, just scores of professional and major college games pulled off the wires. There's even some mobile specific content, weather radar images and traffic cams. The radar was current but even though its 2:45 AM in Jacksonville as I write this, the traffic cams show sunlit freeways. This site is one of the few to have adds. There are small graphic logos of a law firm or a furniture store at the top of several pages. Very few mainstream WAP sites have been able to sell any advertising. I think it's a good omen for the future of the mobile web that a local news site can.

The Orlando Florida Sentinel has a good mobile site with selected full text articles from the news, sports, entertainment, business, lifestyle and editorials sections. A nice feature is that you can email a copy of any article to any email address. The emailed articles include photos which aren't part of the mobile pages.

A simple but unwieldy design consisting of a front page with 48 links and descriptions. The front page fills 50 screenfulls on my 128x160 px reference phone which displays 11 lines of text. The front page is 13.7 KB in size which is too large for some phones to load. I doubt anyone will want to scroll through 50 screens to find and read all of the articles. Fortunately, the most important stories for a local news site - the local news stories - are at the top of the page. The ever popular obituaries are buried near the bottom. The Record's articles are quite nice with considerable depth and there are a lot of them. In addition to the 50 articles linked off the home page there are links to related stories at the end of many articles. Some of the news stories have photos (up to 200px wide) which is still somewhat unusual for local news sites.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel covers Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale. With plenty of full length articles, the Sun-Sentinel is a good mobile news resource for South Florida residents and anyone interested in the area.
