Mobile edition of the Athens Banner-Herald. This Athens is in the US state of Georgia. A very extensive site, it seems to include almost everything in the print edition, news stories, sports, movie reviews, editorials, letters to the editor, columnists and even death notices. Except for movies and the calendar of events, every article is individually listed on and linked from the front page which makes for way too much scrolling on a phone

Chicago Area business news

Mobile Edition of free Chicago weekly. Contains searchable restaurant, movie, theater and concert reviews plus extensive classifieds listings.

The Daily Herald, based in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights, is the third largest newspaper in Illinois. It's popular in Chicago's north and northwest suburbs. The paper's mobile site carries local news, sports, weather, business, entertainment, editorials, local events, editorials and letters to the editor.

The Peoria Journal Star's mobile site includes the full text and selected photos of about 50 items from the paper's News, Sports, Opinions, Entertainment and Business sections. Source: Mobility.mobi

Chicago's NBC5 TV station's (WMAQ) mobile web site at wap.nbc5.com. I'm pretty sure that the site design was done by the same emphasizes local news, weather (with a radar map) and sports. There are also national and entertainment news sections and something called "Weird News" which I'm not so sure about. NBC5's current weird news consists of stories about a family charged with keeping their children in cages, a hearse driver dying on the job and the FBI releasing it's rather boring dossier on Beatle John Lennon. More sad than weird.

Weird news aside, NBC5's mobile news site is a good place for Chicagoans to catch up on local news, sports and weather.

The Springfield, IL State Journal-Register's mobile site offers text-only versions of about 80 recent items from the paper's news, sports and opinions sections plus classified ads, Source: Mobility.mobi

Mobile news site of the Bloomington Indiana Herald Times.  Like the Herald Times full site, the mobile one is a bit of a teaser with a $5.95/month subscription required to view the full site.  The free parts of the site include the weather forecast, classifieds, events calendar, movie show times, wining lottery numbers and one top news story. The newspaper business is definitely in trouble but I doubt that a pay wall on the mobile news site will help much.  I suspect that an ad supported site (htonl.mobi currently has no ads) would do better. eTruth is the online edition of Elkhart Truth daily paper. It uses a responsive mobile design that adapts to different viewports and captures the look and feel of a print newspaper very well. Content includes the full text and a few photos from about a hundred items in the paper's news, sports, business, entertainment, obituaries and  editorials sections along with a five day weather forecast. 

The Evansville, Indiana Courier Press' recently redesigned mobile site has news, photos, sports, business, entertainment, lifestyle, editorials  and weather.
