There is a major new release of  the UCWEB browser in the works.  It’s Version 7.0 and is already in its second Beta.  The official Beta releases are Chinese only but several users have created English translations and posted them to the UCWEB User Forum. Updated: Verizon Woos Developers With Openness

I’ve been watching a live webcast of  the Verizon Developer Community Conference that is being held today in San Jose. The U.S.’s biggest mobile operator is saying that they are through with the walled garden and proprietary platforms.  Developers are being promised that going forward it will be much easier, faster and less costly to get their apps to market on Verizon phones. Java Verified Not An Ovi Store Requirement After All!

At S60Blogs, which is published by Nokia, Aleksi Uotila has clarified that Java Verified certification is NOT a requirement for Java ME applications to be accepted in the Ovi Store.  Apps must still pass Java Verified test criteria and do need to be signed with a Verisgn or Thawte certificate, but testing by an independent test house while recommended, is not required.  Nokia will apparently do the testing themselves at no charge to the developer. Thanks to tips from a couple of readers, I can report that the official English version of UCWEB 6.3 for Java ME phones is now available. MWC09: Bolt Browser – New Version and Open Beta

Update: Feature list for new version added. At Mobile World Congress, Bitstream, Inc. announced that the Bolt Browser is now in public Beta, freely available to anyone without the need for a Beta code. Bitstream has released an update (V. 0.83) to their Java ME based Bolt full-web mobile browser. Here’s a changelog: APN configuration automated for BlackBerry devices.  BOLT now auto-detects network details.  This will eliminate the “internet not available” error messages, and manual APN configuration requirements, some BlackBerry users were experiencing. Bolt Browser Review

I’ve been playing with the Bolt browser for a couple of hours now and my impressions are generally pretty good.  Bolt is from Cambridge, Massachusetts based Bitstream, a company best known for it’s digital fonts and font rendering software.
