Using Firefox Mobile on the Nokia N9

I had to send the N9 back to NokiaConnects on Friday as my two week trial was up. Before returning the phone I installed Firefox Mobile on the N9 and created this video showing the installation process and Firefox mobile running on the device. Firefox Mobile on MeeGo/Harmattan is not an official release from Mozilla. Luckily for us a developer named shmerl has packaged the latest Firefox Mobile nightly build for Harmattan and posted a link to it on forum.meego.com. Here’s how to … Continue reading

How To Enable Developer Mode, Become Root and Install Opera Mobile 11 on the Nokia N9

21-Feb-2012 Opera Software released an official Opera Mobile build for the Nokia N9 and N950 Harmattan phones.  It’s available from the Nokia Store or as a deb package download from Opera. Installing the modified version as described below is no longer necessary or recommended. 31-Jan-2012 Updated post with working download link. I like the N9 Browser (see my review). It’s fast and has great HTML5 support.  But I’m a browser junkie and have to try every browser I can find.  When I discovered a version of Opera Mobile 11.0 … Continue reading

Nokia N9 Browser Review

The Web browser  is the first thing I check out on any new phone. I’ve been using the browser on the N9 quite heavily for the last week.  Read on for my extensive review including a video of the browser in action. The N9 Browser User Interface: Like just about everything in the Swipe UI, the browser’s interface is minimalistic but highly usable. There is a narrow, unmovable docked panel at the top of the screen (image above, left) that contains a combined address/search field … Continue reading

Nokia N9 MeeGo/Harmattan Swipe UI Tips and Tricks

I’m really enjoying my N9 loaner from NokiaConnects. It’s one of the most innovative new phones I’ve used in a long time. The “Swipe” UI is very efficient, there’s obviously been a lot of thought put into making it easy to get things done. Still it is like no other phone before it and users coming from another platform, even Maemo, will need a little time to get up to speed. Thankfully. the learning curve is shallow and after only … Continue reading

N9 Unboxing Part 2 – Power On, Setup and Configuring Wi-Fi

Here’s Part 2 of my Nokia N9 unboxing. This video picks up where Part 1 left off with the phone out of the box but not powered up yet. It shows the boot up animations, initial set up and configuring a Wi-Fi connection. I was pretty impressed with how easy it was to get the phone up an running without a SIM. The Nokia interaction designers have recognized that some of us, including developers and international travelers, will want to use the N9 without … Continue reading

Unboxing the Nokia N9 Part 1

NokiaConnects (formerly WOMWorld/Nokia) has sent me a Nokia N9 loaner to try out and review. I am very excited about getting a chance to try this rare, limited production  device. I’ve honored it with my first ever un-boxing video which is embedded below. If your wondering about the way the video ends, yes I did eventually figure out how to turn the N9 on. I had to (horrors!) look in the manual, but it’s really very easy. I’m editing another … Continue reading

Future Disruption in the Mobile Ecosystem – Nokia’s N9 – Videos, Photos and Specs

Today at Nokia Connection in Singapore Nokia introduced its long awaited MeeGo handset, the N9. It’s a sleek, slim and seamless stunner with a body carved from a single piece of polycarbonate plastic. The 3.9 inch (854×480) screen occupies almost the entire face of the phone. The glass screen curves gently into the body at the sides and the only keys are a volume rocker and lock switch on the right side. The user interface as demoed in the video above … Continue reading

MeeGo Conference – Steady OS Progress But No New Handsets

My mobile dream is a handset with the full power of desktop Linux and X-Server. I saw that realized with Nokia’s Maemo. The N900 was an amazing device when it was introduced 3 years ago. But today it’s starting to show its age in areas like performance, screen technology and unfashionable thickness. I was very excited to have the opportunity to attend the MeeGo Conference in San Francisco because  I expected that the N900’s successor would released or at least … Continue reading
