The New Twitter Mobile WebApp – Nice Looking But Less functional?

Yesterday Twitter announced that it was in the process of rolling out a new design that would unify Twitter’s look and feel across all platforms.  The new full Web version will be rolled out slowly but according the Twitter the new look is available now in the Android and iOS apps and at mobile.twitter.com. At least that’s what they say. I headed over to mobile.twitter.com to look at the new design. And to my surprise I saw the “old” Twitter … Continue reading

Highlights Of Mobilize 2011

Here are my top take-aways from GigaOm‘s two day Mobilize conference which wrapped up yesterday. Mobile payments are coming, but when and how? The mobile payments panel was interesting but I think it showed just how chaotic the payments space is right now. It had representatives from PayPal, Visa, Intuit and VeriFone all arguing for their own largely incompatible solutions. 2015 was mentioned by several panelists as the “year of mobile payments”, when most phones would have payment capabilities and most merchants who be ready to accept mobile payments.  To ensure … Continue reading

Moving From Twitter to Identi.ca – Mobile Clients

On Friday Ryan Sarver, Twitter’s Product Manager for the Platform / API team dropped a bomb on third party Twitter app developers with a post on the “Twitter API Announcement” Google Group that included the chilling line “…developers ask us if they should build client apps that mimic or reproduce the mainstream Twitter consumer client experience,” he wrote. The answer is no.” Sarver’s statement was echoed  by recent changes in Twitter’s terms of service. Techcrunch did a comparison of the … Continue reading

Moving On From Mobile Bloglines

I’ve been using Bloglines Mobile (image top, left) in Opera Mini for over five years  to keep up with over one hundred mobile bloggers and forums.  It was an awesome combination, I could read my 170+ feed subscriptions with it in Opera Mini on a 2G feature phone faster than I could with Google Reader on the desktop. Plus, Opera Mini let me save  all my unread items as a single page for off-line reading. Bloglines has been dying a … Continue reading

Twitter Mobile WebApp and Browser OAuth Scorecard

It’s been three months since the “OAuthcalypse” when Twitter started requiring that third party apps use OAuth to access the Twitter APIs. OAuth is generally a good thing, as it means you no longer have to share your Twitter credentials with every app that wants to access Twitter on your behalf, greatly reducing the risk that a rouge app might start spamming or posting malicious tweets in your name. Apps can still misuse  your Twitter account but if one does  … Continue reading
