Opera Mini, Bolt and UC Browser On Bada Phones!

Samsung’s Dolfin browser on the Wave bada phone is a good one  in most respects. It loads pages quickly,  has excellent JavaScript performance and supports geo-location and many HTML5 features. But I found it unusable with many desktop sites because the fonts are too small to read at the zoom level where text columns fit the screen. UCWEB Android Version Found!

While poking around on the Chinese language UCWEB site looking for release notes for UCWEB 7.  I discovered an Android version of UCWEB7 Beta 1. I downloaded it to my Google Ion (aka HTC Mgic) and it seems to work pretty well.  It’s rather basic, with only fit-to-width “Adaptive Mode”.  I couldn’t find a way to zoom or vary the text size. Updated: UCWEB 7 Final Released

UCWEB 7 is out of Beta.  The official release is in Chinese only but, Manojr “Mannuforall” Tiwari  has done an unofficial English translation which is available on his blog. A release announcement with screenshots and a list of features (in Chinese) is  here (Google translation). Leaked UCWEB 7 Java Version With Zoom Mode

UCWEB guru “Jbpseudo“, sent me a link an English translation of a leaked version (7.02.3) of the upcoming UCWEB 7 browser.  The main change since UCWEB 7 Beta 2, which I covered 2 weeks ago, is that it now offers the equivalent what Opera calls “Desktop View” where pages are formatted more or less as they are in desktop browsers, with horizontal scrolling required to see the full width of the page.  In UCWEB it’s known as “Zoom Mode” and … Continue reading →

UC Browser Version 7 Beta 2 Is Much Improved – But Popular Sites Are Blocked By The “Great Firewall”

There is a major new release of  the UCWEB browser in the works.  It’s Version 7.0 and is already in its second Beta.  The official Beta releases are Chinese only but several users have created English translations and posted them to the UCWEB User Forum. About a month ago All About Symbian‘s  Rafe Blandford published an extensive set of browser speed test results. Bolt Beta 3 Browser Review

I’ve been using the new release of Bolt (V 1.04, aka Beta 3) for about a day now and I’m quite impressed.  This release represents a significant upgrade.  The new support for bold and italic fonts, file uploading  and copying text from web pages is particularly welcome.
