If you are running a previous version of Bolt, you should be prompted to upgrade. New users can point their mobile or PC browsers at <a title=\"mobile site\" href=\"http:\/\/boltbrowser.com\">boltbrowser.com<\/a> to download Bolt 1.6.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/portal\/site\/home\/permalink\/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20091207005160&amp;newsLang=en\">press release<\/a>, the new features in Bolt 1.6 are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For all mobile data networks that support it, BOLT 1.6 now offers full socket-based connectivity which can increase the page rendering speed of BOLT by as much as 15 percent.<\/li>\n<li>BOLT 1.6 also includes a new password manager, allowing usernames and passwords to be saved by the browser for easier and faster logins to users\u2019 favorite websites and online applications.<\/li>\n<li>Responding to a frequent request from BOLT\u2019s BlackBerry smartphone users, BOLT 1.6 can now be set as the default browser on their smartphones. A version of BOLT created specifically for BlackBerry smartphones not only has all the features of BOLT, but also includes default BlackBerry shortcuts and optimizations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Bolt - Password Manager \" src=\"https:\/\/wapreview.com\/images\/BoltPasswordManager.jpg\" alt=\"Bolt - Password Manager \" width=\"242\" height=\"322\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bolt - Twitter \" src=\"https:\/\/wapreview.com\/images\/BoltTwitter.jpg\" alt=\"Bolt - Twitter \" width=\"242\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The password manager is a great addition. Retyping passwords on most phones is a pain, especially as many sites, like Yahoo, do not properly persist logins using a long lasting cookie.\u00a0 The password manager means that you should never have to retype your password.<\/p>\n<p>Bolt 1.5 already had a socket transport option in <em>Preferences<\/em>, so I&#8217;m puzzled as to how that is a new feature.\u00a0 Perhaps 1.5&#8217;s socket implementation was less than &#8220;full&#8221;? However as long as it&#8217;s faster I&#8217;m not complaining.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t run any formal speed tests but 1.6 does seem to load pages a little quicker than 1.5.<\/p>\n<p>Being able to set Bolt as the default browser is a huge plus for BlackBerry users. I wish that option was available on other platforms although I understand that on S60 and most feature phones it is impossible due to OS limitations.<\/p>\n<p>While 1.6 doesn&#8217;t represent a major upgrade, the new features are certainly welcome.\u00a0 I continue to be particularly impressed by Bolt&#8217;s rendering quality and compatibility with virtually any site.\u00a0 Bolt is one of the very few mobile browsers that works with virtually all sites, even AJAX heavy ones like the desktop versions of\u00a0 iGoogle and Twitter. In fact, it even loads Google Wave, although replying and creating new Waves in Bolt doesn&#8217;t quite work.\u00a0\u00a0 The ability to deal with complex JavaScript is Bolt&#8217;s strong point. This is an amazing accomplishment for a proxy browser.\u00a0 Opera Mini and UCWEB are way behind\u00a0 Bitstream in this regard. I&#8217;m really hoping that Bitstream can build on this strength by adding more features especially tabs and a fit to width mode in the next release.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m also hoping that an\u00a0 Android release is in the cards.\u00a0 I think that Android has a great future but that the default browser with its broken cache implementation and many render issues is holding the platform back.\u00a0 I notice that <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/boltbrowser\">@boltbrowser<\/a> Tweets about Android a lot.\u00a0 Is that a sign of Droid interest at Bitstream headquarters?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The mobile browser wars continue.\u00a0 Hot on the heels of Opera&#8217;s second Beta of Mini and Mobile and UCWB&#8217;s version 7 release, Bitsream today announced that Bolt 1.6 is now available for download.
