Found on the Mobile Web #20

Found on the mobile web is an occasional Wap Review feature listing new and updated sites featured on the yeswap.com mobile portal and WapReview mobile site directory.

Entertainment/Mobile Video

MobileTV4U: (mobiletv4u.eu) Another mobile video download site. All videos are available as .3gp, .mp4 and real formats. The .mp4 videos seem be smaller than the .3gp ones which doesn’t make sense as .mp4 is higher quality and always has a larger file size. Not surprisingly, I couldn’t get any of the the .mp4’s to play.

Entertainment/Movies

Movly: (www.movly.com) A new movie news site featuring Trailers in 3gp format, promotional stills (resized to fit your browser’s width), user reviews, film industry news, a user forum and an extensive database of film lore. It even supports wml only handsets.

Entertainment/Photo Sharing

Picassa Picasa: (picasaweb.google.com/m) Picasa Web Albums is Google’s answer to Yahoo’s Flickr. The mobile version of Picassa Web allows you to view your own albums and everyone’s public albums. You can also do keyword searches for photos. Unlike Flickr Mobile, Picasa, doesn’t support uploading photos from your phone. Via: Google Blogoscoped

News/US Local By State/GA – IL

KHNL NBC 8: (khnl.com/?clienttype=mobile) Local News, Sports and Weather from a Honolulu, HI TV station. The mobile site includes a selection of top stories from the PC site. On both the full and mobile sites, news stories are short and lacking in detail. Sports items are better – more detailed.

News/US Local By State/IN-NV

The Frederick News-Post: (mobile.newspost.com) Local Newspaper for Frederick, Maryland. Features 18 stories from the paper’s Local News, Opnion, Sports and Business sections. Not a bad little site although performance and download size could be improved by removing unused styles from the 8KB stylesheet linked to each page.

News/US Local By State/OR-WY

The Olympian: (m.theolympian.com) Olympia, Washington home town paper. Easy mobile navigation and very small page size makes it a very mobile friendly site. However, the news “stories” are too short (typically a single sentence) to be useful.

News/International

The MirrorMirror on your Mobile: (mirror.opnr.com) British tabloid journalism comes to your mobile. The Daily Mirror’s mobile site has a slick and flashy design. Via: Mobitopia

Shopping

Amazon: (amazon.com/gp/aw/h.html) Amazon.com has enhanced their mobile site with 1-click shopping. This means that the site uses a cookie so that you don’t have to log in every time and that product pages have a Buy Now with One Click button. Pressing the button will make the purchase using a credit card and shipping address that you have on file with Amazon. Via: Resource shelf

Moosejaw: (moosejaw.mobi) is a bricks and mortar and online retailer specializing in outdoor sports gear. Their .mobi site lets you search and browse the catalog to find gear and check prices. Although there’s a shopping cart link on the site there doesn’t seem to be any way to actually put anything in it! Via: DM News

Reference

Melissa: (melissamobile.com) is an online database of US demographic information. Enter a zip code to get information (location, population, number of businesses, average home price, etc.) . Other searches validate a mailing address and get general location information (not a reverse directory search) about a phone number or area code. Via: Resource Shelf
