Found on the Mobile Web is an occasional WAP Review feature listing newly added and updated sites on the YesWAP.com mobile portal and WapReview mobile site directory. With these latest additions the directory and portal now list 1293 mobile sites.
NewsNow (nnmob.com) which claims to be “The UK’s #1 News Portal” is a River of News style aggregator which is updated every five minutes with news headlines from hundreds of online sources around the world. The mobile page includes just the headline which link to the original (generally non-mobile) source site. NewsNow recommends using Opera Mini to view the site, if you visit with any other mobile browser you land on a splash page with an Opera Mini download link. The splash page also has the option to: “…try NewsNow Mobile with your device’s built-in browser (not recommended)”
News/International/Middle East
EmiratesNews (emiratesnews.mobi/?nomo=false) Mobile edition of a news blog covering the United Arab Emirates. Updated frequently throughout the day, EmiratesNews is focused on local news. Source: Mobility.mobi
The Jerusalem Post (mobile.jpost.com/) Mobile edition of Israel’s largest English language newspaper and news web site. The mobile site is quite comprehensive with extensive reportage of Israeli, Middle East and World news along with editorials. There are also links to Sports, Business, Health, Tourism and Business sections which disappointingly lead to empty pages.
Al Jazeera (m.aljazeera.net) English language mobile site from the most popular TV news channel in the Arab World. Al Jazerra is based in Qatar. The mobile site covers international and regional news and has extensive Sports and Business sections. Full length articles include news photos.
News/US Loacal/Alabama-California
Santa Cruz Sentinel (m.santacruzsentinel.com) Mobile web edition of the Northern Califiornia college town and surf mecca’s daily paper. The well designed site has over a hundred current, unabridged items in news, sports, business, editorials and letters sections. Most are illustrated with a news photo. I like that today’s weather forecast appears at the top of the home page. It’s possibe to register for an account allowing you to customize whch sections of the site you see by default. Registration requires an SMS activation code however, which seems unecessary and overly intrusive. Source: Oh! Mobile Directory.
Nashoba Publishing operates weekly newspapers in several small Massachusetts towns; The Ayer Public Spirit, Groton Landmark, Harvard Hillside, Pepperell Free Press, Shirley Oracle and the Townsend Times. The six papers share the same website at nashobapublishing.com and a mobile site at m.nashobapublishing.com. The mobile edition has local news sections for each of the towns plus shared obituaries, columists, letters to the editor, weather and sports sections. Articles are full length but text-only. News/US Local by State/Minnesota -New Jersey
Duluth News Tribune (m.duluthnewstribune.com) Text-only mobile site of Duluth Minnesota daily. Local News, Sports, Weather and Classified Ads. Source: Oh! Mobile Directory
Pro FootBall Weekly (m.profootballweekly.com) Extensive, in-depth coverage of US profession football from mobile online edition of a print newspaper. Disappointingly, it seems to be text only. The paper’s full-web site at profootballweekly.com has loads of pictures, how about resizing a few of the better ones for the mobile web? From Microflash via Twitter.
Wines.mobi A free wine search engine. Wines.mobi carries street prices and wine ratings for 85,000 wines going back to 1890.
This site is fast and seems to have a very extensive database of wines. Some pages carry ads that were clearly not designed for mobile. They are 480px wide and lead to non-mobile landing pages. Fortunately the non-mobile ads are served using JavaScript and won’t display on most mobile phones.
Arlanda Express (wap.arlandaexpress.com/subindex.jsp?lang=en) Real Time arrival information for the express train between downtown Stockholm and the city’s Arlanda International Airport. The trains travel at 120 mph (200 kph) and the trip takes approximately 20 minutes. The fare is SEK 220 (about $35). The mobile site also has free train chime ringtone downloads. source: jonarnes via twitter
