Ready.mobi – Great Resource for Mobile Web Developers

Dev.mobi has updated their free Ready.mobi site checker. The checker’s developer Ruadhan O’Donoghue, has a nice writeup explaining the new features here. I’m very impressed with this new mobile web development tool. There are really two separate ready.mobi checkers. The basic checker, which requires no registration, checks a single page on 32 points of compliance with mobile web best practices. There is a mobile device emulator built into the result page that lets you see the site as it would … Continue reading

Tumblr – Mobilise Anything!

Steve Rubel posted about how he’s using Tumblr to create a Tumblelog, The Steve Rubel Lifestream, at steverubel.com. It’s a site that rolls up Steve’s blog posts, his Flickr and Del.icio.us feeds, Twitter tweets and Facebook notes in one place. There’s even a mobile edition (steverubel.com/mobile) . The mobile aspect of Tumblelogs looked intriguing so I visited Tumblr.com to see what it was all about. Tumbler is a free service that combines multiple RSS feeds plus content from del.icio.us, Flickr, … Continue reading

Zagat.mobi – Crowd Sourced Reviews

The “wisdom of the crowd” concept where the averaged opinions of thousands of people is used to evaluate the worth of a product or idea is a certainly big part of today’s web, think of Amazon Reviews, TripAdvisor.com or Digg. As much as it’s a part of the current web 2.0 buzz it’s not a new idea. Zagat Survey has been applying the “wisdom of the crowd” since 1979. Its first product was a New York City restaurant guidebook based … Continue reading

FeedM8 – Create Instant Mobile Web Sites From Feeds

I got an email from Ivan at Wattpad.com announcing his new mobile service, FeedM8. What it does is create a mobile site from an RSS feed. There are other services that do this. But the only ones I can recommend are Mowser (review), Winksite (review) and now FeedM8. I like these three because they are the only ones of the dozen or so I’ve tried that split long posts into mobile sized chunks and deliver clean and valid markup that … Continue reading

Gannett has 106 Mobile Local News Sites!

A number of recent Found on the Mobile Web posts have included local newspapers from Gannett, the largest US publisher of daily papers. I’d heard that Gannett had plans to create a mobile site for every one of their newspapers and TV stations. They’ve reached that goal and have issued a press release listing all 106 sites, including the URL of each site. It’s amazing how almost every press release announcing a new mobile site is doesn’t list the url! … Continue reading

The Carnival features the best posts on mobile topics from the past week, don’t miss … Continue reading

Mobile Web Developers – Minimize Your Options!

Dropdown lists are very widely used on web forms. Travel sites often have month and date pickers implemented as dropdown lists using <select> and <option> tags. It works pretty well on a desktop browser. Be careful when transferring this design pattern to the mobile web, though. <select>s with too many <option>s can break a mobile page. I’m not just talking about usability either, I mean broken as in completely non-functional. Recently, I tried to use the mobile site of a … Continue reading
