Webcams and i-Mode

I ran across a neat little mobile site called i-Mode Webcams which has links to fifty or so webcams around the world – mostly cityscapes and street scenes. Handy if you want to check the weather across the world or across the city. The images are scaled down to 120 pixels wide by default so they should work on just about any WAP2 phone. You can also specify a different width if your phone has a larger screen. You can … Continue reading

STi now at CompUSA

Yesterday, I wrote an item about STi Mobile, a new prepaid MVNO with low rates especially for web access. Total cost to keep the phone active and have unlimited WAP access is $5.22 /month including all taxes and fees. I listed as one of the few negatives of STi that very few retail outlets carry STi phones – you basically have to buy the phone and all refills online. That’s no longer true. Imagine my surprise when I saw in … Continue reading

More cheap unlimited WAP

A while ago I wrote about Boost Mobile a US pre-paid carrier offering unlimited WAP and Java ME app data access for a total cost of $6.67 a month including tax. Today I saw another unlimited WAP deal that’s even better. It was featured on Ian’s blog Go4Prepaid with an update on the pricing here. The carrier is an MVNO called STi Mobile using Sprint PCS’s 1900 mHz CDMA 1xRTT network. The unlimited WAP deal is 17 cents a day … Continue reading

Cingular MediaNet

This is interesting if not all that useful. Cingular, the largest US mobile carrier, allows non-subscribers to connect to their WAP portal which they call MediaNet. The url is http://kevxml2a.infospace.com/cinglr.wap/wml11/index.wml Although the .wml extension usually means a WAP1 site, Cingular uses browser sniffing to send either WAP1 or WAP2 content depending on the capabilities of your phone’s browser. If you don’t want to key that long url into your phone, you can find it linked on my WAP portal site … Continue reading

Boost Mobile

If you want the least expensive truly unlimited mobile browsing in the US you should look at Boost Mobile. Boost is Nextel’s pre-paid product. Boost is, in my opinion, THE best deal in the country for mobile browsing. I’ve been a Boost Mobile user for two and a half years, and am quite happy with the service. Unlimited WAP is $6 a month and that’s not on top of a monthly charge, this is a prepaid, no contract carrier. You … Continue reading
