Mobile Drinkboy (drinkboy.com/offline/) – an Avantgo channel that’s accessible from outside Avantgo. Mobile DrinkBoy features a large collection of cocktail recipes sorted by name or type booze used.Soccerway
Sports

Soccerway (soccerway.mobi) is a big soccer (football) site covering the sport from around the world with real time scores, news and statistics. This is a “one size fits all” mobile site, but unfortunately some of the pages are a little too big (20 KB text plus 13 KB of images) to load on all phones.

News/International

Inside Kerala (insidekerala.com) offers news from the South Indian state of Kerala. This site is a good example of how to deliver all the content of a full desktop news site in a way that can be easily used on a mobile device. Even though it’s big site with hundreds of full length articles the individual pages are all under 10KB, the limit for many mobile browsers. The site is easy to navigate with content divided into sections and subsections like main news, sports, entertainment, entertainment, culture and science.

News/US Local by State

TBO.com Mobile (tbo.com/pda/) The mobile version of Tampa Bay Online, which is theTampa, Florida Tribune’s web site. The mobile site contains the full text (but no photos) of a dozen headline stories from the full site. I’d like to see more content. There is no reason to pick and choose articles to include in the mobile edition of a news site. Mobile users deserve access to full text of all articles, organized and formated to be usable on their devices.Wall Street Journal

Business/News

Wall Street Journal (mobile2.wsj.com/) – News Corp’s Rupert Murdoch has said that once he completes the acquisition of the Wall Street Journal he will drop the Journal’s WSJ.com subscription model and provide free access to all content. The mobile edition of the Journal has been free since 2006 and was recently redesigned to include more content.

Search

abphone (m.abphone.com) is a new mobile search site. Currently it’s an image search, except in France and the UK where you can also search for video. In an email, Abphone’s Pierre Scokaert told me that the video search will go live worldwide in the first quarter of 2008 along with a music search to be released at the same time. Abphone is also working on a game search which is set to launch in the second quarter of 2008.

Technology/Mobile/Downloads

Save2Phone (wap.save2phone.com/myzus/mobile/) has over 2000 downloadable freeware, shareware and demo mobile applications and games for Java, Symbian, Palm and Windows Mobile phones. The mobile site is slow, hard to navigate and there are no descriptions of the files, only filenames. The best way to use this site is to first visit the full web version of Save2Phone at www.save2phone.com with a PC. The full site is also slow, but it’s better organized and has descriptions of the files. Each file on the PC site has a numeric code which can be entered on the front page of mobile site to download the file directly to your phone.

EuroMeteo

Weather

Eurometeo (mobile.eurometeo.com/en/home) is an Italian based weather site with weather forecasts and satellite images for all of Europe as well as Mediterranean tide tables and marine forecasts for Italian waters.

Technology/Mobile/Smartphones/Palm

TreoToday (treotoday.net/?mobi) is a popular blog covering Palm’s Treo Smartphones. This is the latest of many blogs running WordPress which have mobilized their content using Andy Moore’s WordPress Mobile Plugin

Travel – Transit/Air/Airlines/

Air Tran Airways (airtran.com) is a US low-fare airline. Their mobile site features schedules, flight status, seat selection and my favorite feature, mobile check in. I got an “infinite redirect” error using the airtran.com address on my Motorola i855. Airtran.com redirects mobile browsers to: mobile.usablenet.com/mt/http://www.airtran.com/Home.aspx. Entering that long url directly on my phone worked without error.

  1. Boba,

Thanks for your comment. The Motorola’s not a great phone but that’s not the point. It’s a common phone currently sold by a major US carrier. A commercial site like AirTran’s needs to just work on as many handsets as possible.

The error is actually coming from Nextel’s gateway not the phone, which means that the site does not work on 20 million user’s phones.

    Dennis
