Mobile Social Messaging with Bluepulse

When I last looked at Bluepulse a year and a half ago, it was an Australian company with a Java ME based mobile widget platform. Well that has changed and Bluepulse is now headquartered in Silicon Valley (in YouTube’s old offices!) with a “social messaging” service. What’s that? Bluepulse describes social messaging as “as the love child of a social network and an instant messenger”, combining typical social network features like profiles, chat, friends, groups, photo and video sharing and … Continue reading

Sprint’s “OpenWeb” No Upgrade

Last week Opera released a minor upgrade to the Opera Mini browser. I like to follow the latest releases so I downloaded it to all my phones from mini.opera.com. I used each phone’s built-in browser so Opera could detect the phone model and send the optimal version of Opera Mini. All went well until I tried to upgrade my Samsung A920. I got a message “Your phone model could not be detected” This seemed strange as Opera had recognized the … Continue reading

Buxfer – Mobile Money Manager

Buxfer has gotten some attention lately as one of the first two sites to use Google Gears for Mobile which lets you use web sites even when you have no network connection. The other Gears Mobile powered site, online office suite Zoho, only works with Windows Mobile devices. But Buxfer, which is a free personal finance and payment service,  supports most phones with both a mobile site and an SMS interface. Of course, only WinMo phones get the advantage of … Continue reading

WebClip2Go – Web Page Snippets For Your Phone

If you’re like me, I bet there’s a lot of web content you’ll like to use on your phone but which isn’t available in mobile friendly form. The traditional solution to this problem is to use a full web browser like Opera Mini or a transcoder like Mowser, both of which work pretty well but can still leave you scrolling through lots of irrelevant junk to get to the content. Startup eZee inc has released a free service called WebClip2Go … Continue reading

Heady Days For Mobile

Whew, today saw not one but all three of the traditional web powerhouses; Google, Microsoft and Yahoo make major mobile announcements. Google’s Gears for Mobile is, I think the most significant of the three and the only one that’s actually available today. Gears stores online content locally making it available whether there’s an active data connection or not. Initially it’s only for Window’s Mobile 5 and 6 and only with two applications, the Zoho online office suite and the personal … Continue reading

Avvenu – Browse Your PC From a Phone

Avvenu, which was recently acquired by Nokia, is similar to SoonR (review) in that both provide remote web access to files on a desktop PC from a phone or another PC.  I’m a satisfied SoonR user, is Avvenu good enough to switch? To use Avvenu, you start off by installing the Avvenu client program, which runs all the time in the background, on the PC (Windows XP and Vista only). Then, when you log into Avvenu’s mobile (https://mobile.avvenu.com) or PC … Continue reading
