MyFox

MyFox (wap.myfoxlocal.com) offers mobile news sites for 24 Fox TV network local affiliates. I’m a little disappointed by these sites. They are text-only and many of the news stories are just headline teasers. Here’s an example from the Los Angeles site, this is the whole “story”. “Music Producer Helping Foster Kids Through Music They’re L.A.’s toughest cases… Foster care kids since birth. Tony McEwing report on how a veteran music producer and former foster kid is stepping up to give … Continue reading

ING DIRECT Mobile Banking

ING DIRECT is an internet bank with very good interest rates on insured savings and checking accounts. ING recently launched a mobile banking site which lets customers view balances and transactions and transfer funds between accounts using their mobile phones. The site works fairly well but has some issues. The first problem is that when I tried the URL that ING publishes, ingdirect.com/m, my Motorola i850 reported “Could not connect to site”. I tried it in Firefox to capture the … Continue reading

Carnival of the Mobilists 82

The week C. Enrique Ortiz is hosting the Carnival of the Mobilists at his redesigned and renamed blog …about mobility. The Carnival is a weekly tradition that highlights the best recent postings on mobile topics from around the blogsphere. Enrique has assembled an especially good Carnival this time. There are several interesting posts on the mobile web including my favorite by Stuart Dredge of Pocket Picks‘ Top 5 mobile internet sites that you’ll actually use. Take a look. BareSite – Another Mobile Transcoder

BareSite.com: (baresite.com) is another mobile transcoder. I like the name,  it may sound like  a porn site, but at least you aren’t likely to forget it. Mobile transcoding is a crowded field with some tough competition. I don’t use transcoders much any more since the advent of Opera Mini but new ones keep popping up and for good reason. There are millions of BREW phones from Verizon, Alltel and US Cellular that can’t run Opera Mini so there is a … Continue reading

MyCorner – Mobile Video

MyCorner: (m.mycorner.com) Is a nicely designed site with a variety of user submitted news, tech sports and travel videos in 176×144 .3gp format. I enjoyed the ones taken by someone wandering around the big 3GSM trade show in Barcelona earlier this year. Anyone can download, you must register to submit videos. Registration can be done on the phone or on MyCorner’s PC web site and requires giving your mobile phone number. As far as I know MyCorner is reputable but … Continue reading

MizPee – Your Mobile Toilet Advisor

MizPee (mizpee.com/mizpee/Mainmenu.do) is a new mobile site that aims to help you find a place to go when you gotta go. The premise is simple, enter an address and MizPee will find the nearest public restroom. Toilets are user rated from 1-5, represented not by stars but by toilet paper roll icons. Hours are listed along with whether there is handicapped access, a baby changing table or a charge for using the loo. Listings are currently limited to New York, … Continue reading

Found on the Mobile Web #20

Found on the mobile web is an occasional Wap Review feature listing new and updated sites featured on the yeswap.com mobile portal and WapReview mobile site directory. Entertainment/Mobile Video MobileTV4U: (mobiletv4u.eu) Another mobile video download site. All videos are available as .3gp, .mp4 and real formats. The .mp4 videos seem be smaller than the .3gp ones which doesn’t make sense as .mp4 is higher quality and always has a larger file size. Not surprisingly, I couldn’t get any of the the … Continue reading

The host of the week picks the 10 or so best and highlights them in a special Carnival post. This week’s host, Tarek Ghazali, has done a fine job of tying together some great posts with the theme – Pharaohs’ Style. Link: Carnival of the Mobilists #81; Pharaohs’ Style at Symbiano-Tek
