TIME Magazine

TIME was the first newsweekly magazine in the US and before the rise of the web diminished its influence, being on the cover of TIME generated immediate nationwide celebrity or notoriety – the cover subjects weren’t always the good guys. While not much attention is paid anymore to the weekly cover person, TIMEs annual Person of the Year still generates considerable buzz. TIME.com has been on the web since 1998 and its current web edition is both very complete and … Continue reading

Carnival of the Mobilists 47

This week’s carnival is at Communities Dominate Brands. Host Tomi Ahonen has created a collection of the best blog items on mobile communication for your discovery and exploration. It’s a great Carnival of the Mobilists. Thank’s Tomi, for including my item on the Weblogs, Inc Sites. Congratulations to David Beers who scored Post of the Week honors for his Concertino for Cell phones and Orchestra.

AP Elections 2006

Alexander at MobileRead has posted about the Associated Press’ new Election 2006 mobile site (mer.ap.org) which offers state by state results for all national and major state offices. The results of this year’s primaries are currently posted – most of these occurred months ago. This could be a great site to follow the Nov. 7th congressional and senate elections. However, it will need to be updated in a timely manner to be useful. It’s not a good sign that as … Continue reading

A Must Read for Mobile Web Developers

Luca Passani has created a great document for anyone doing or considering mobile web development. It’s titled “Global Authoring Practices for the Mobile Web” and is a concise recipe for building a “one size fits all” mobile site. This is the simplest type of mobile site to create, one which meets the lowest common denominator (LCD) of mobile browser capabilities as opposed to a site that adapts to different devices to give the best possible experience on each. Luca is … Continue reading

Engadget Mobile and More

The explosion of new mobile web sites continues. Yesterday Jason Calacanis the CEO of Weblogs, Inc announced on his blog that all Weblogs, Inc blogs are being mobilized. Weblogs, Inc which is owned by AOL, is the largest enterprise blog network with over 30 active sites including some very well known names like Engadget, The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) and Autoblog. These “blogs” are really slick online news sites with paid writers and very large readership. Engadget is Alexa’s number … Continue reading

More Mobile Diggs

A couple more mobilized versions of Digg.com have been released recently. First there is the official Diggriver.com (first image) from Digg itself. It’s another River of News site inspired by Dave Winer’s nytimesriver.com and bbcriver.com. Diggriver, unlike the other rivers, keeps the front page size under 10KB and will load on almost any mobile phone. Diggriver: cHtml Content: Usability: The biggest problem with Diggriver and the other mobilized Digg sites like Digg Mobile is that they just mobilize the Digg … Continue reading

I’m pleased and grateful that one of my items was included. Head on over to the Carnival and join the fun.

NY Times

There are so many new mobile sites lately. A year or two ago I’d be lucky if I found a review-worthy new mobile site every month. More mobile sites were shutting down than opening up. That has all changed. I hear of a new site literally every day. I’m hoping to keep up with the flood with more but shorter reviews. First off, the New York Times. You won’t get much argument, The Times is the US’s best newspaper. I … Continue reading
