TIME Magazine

TIME was the first newsweekly magazine in the US and before the rise of the web diminished its influence, being on the cover of TIME generated immediate nationwide celebrity or notoriety – the cover subjects weren’t always the good guys. While not much attention is paid anymore to the weekly cover person, TIMEs annual Person of the Year still generates considerable buzz. TIME.com has been on the web since 1998 and its current web edition is both very complete and … Continue reading

AP Elections 2006

Alexander at MobileRead has posted about the Associated Press’ new Election 2006 mobile site (mer.ap.org) which offers state by state results for all national and major state offices. The results of this year’s primaries are currently posted – most of these occurred months ago. This could be a great site to follow the Nov. 7th congressional and senate elections. However, it will need to be updated in a timely manner to be useful. It’s not a good sign that as … Continue reading

Engadget Mobile and More

The explosion of new mobile web sites continues. Yesterday Jason Calacanis the CEO of Weblogs, Inc announced on his blog that all Weblogs, Inc blogs are being mobilized. Weblogs, Inc which is owned by AOL, is the largest enterprise blog network with over 30 active sites including some very well known names like Engadget, The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) and Autoblog. More Mobile Diggs

A couple more mobilized versions of Digg.com have been released recently. First there is the official Diggriver.com (first image) from Digg itself. It’s another River of News site inspired by Dave Winer’s nytimesriver.com and bbcriver.com. Diggriver, unlike the other rivers, keeps the front page size under 10KB and will load on almost any mobile phone. Diggriver: cHtml Content: Usability: The biggest problem with Diggriver and the other mobilized Digg sites like Digg Mobile is that they just mobilize the Digg … Continue reading

NY Times

There are so many new mobile sites lately. A year or two ago I’d be lucky if I found a review-worthy new mobile site every month. More mobile sites were shutting down than opening up. That has all changed. I hear of a new site literally every day. I’m hoping to keep up with the flood with more but shorter reviews. First off, the New York Times. You won’t get much argument, The Times is the US’s best newspaper. I … Continue reading

Yahoo Mobile Web Search

Yahoo quietly released a major upgrade to their mobile web based search product last month. I’m surprised that there wasn’t more buzz on this as I think it’s a pretty big deal. I can’t find an official Yahoo announcement and only one blogger, a Yahoo employee, seems to have written anything about it. So what’s new? The big change is that when you do a Web search, Yahoo now includes mobile sites in the results – Yahoo used to only … Continue reading

Kayak Mobile

Kayak.com is a relatively new travel meta-search engine which searches over 120 travel sites including all the major airline sites except Southwest, many hotel chain sites as well as travel booking sites like Orbitz and CheapTickets. It includes a lot of sites you might not think of searching like AsiaRooms.com or Wegolo.com which specializes in European budget airlines. Kayak is purely a search engine like Google – it doesn’t do bookings. You search for the lowest fare or for a … Continue reading
