Too Many Broken Mobile Sites

One of the more frustrating things about Mobile browsing is number of sites that don’t work. This has historically been a problem with WAP. Mobile browsers aren’t like desktop browsers which generally can display even very badly written pages with all sorts of coding errors. Most mobile browsers need to be feed perfect valid and well-formed xhtml or wml. A single little bug like forgetting to close a tag or improper nesting of elements, will cause a typical mobile browser … Continue reading

Windows Live Search – Mobile Beta

I just visited the MSN Mobile homepage and saw two new items in the menu, Windows Live Mail Beta and Windows Live Search Beta. I did a web search and it turns out that they aren’t really that new having been out for over a month, but they seem to have been more or less ignored so far. The Microsoft Live Mobile team has a blog (NOT Firefox friendly) called Mobile access everywhere! which seems to be the best source … Continue reading

Feedalot alternate URL’s

When I reviewed (update) the mobile edition of the Feedalot RSS aggregator a while ago I noted that images in feeds were removed and replaced with the text “[image removed]”. Links in feeds got the same treatment, being replaced with “[link removed]”. Given the constraints of most phone browsers, I think it’s reasonable for Feedalot to remove images and external links, although I could do without the …removed messages which break up the flow of the item text. But what … Continue reading

Gmail Mobile

Google recently released Gmail Mobile. Given the buzz around Gmail and the fact that Charlie Schick is wondering what my take is on Gmail, I HAD to take a look a it. First of all, I had no luck getting Google to send me an SMS invite. Supposedly, anyone with a US mobile phone capable of receiving text messages can have an invitation sent to their phone by visiting this page with their desktop browser. Well, it didn’t work for … Continue reading

Bloglines Mobile

I added Bloglines to the Directory and Portal. I know I panned the poor usability of the mobile site, a week ago, but I find myself using it daily nonetheless. Here’s why – synchronization. I want my mobile reader to only show me items I haven’t read already on the desktop and vice versa. Along with a million or two other folks, I use Bloglines on the desktop, it’s simply the best aggregator around. The main problem with Bloglines Mobile … Continue reading

Review of mobile search engines

Avec Mobile has posted a Review of mobile search engines. There is also a PDA format version (21 KB in size) here. Nice screenshots and an interesting discussion. Here at Wap Review we have covered most of these sites and some others in the Search and Reference sections. I hope Avec Mobile continues to review mobile sites, it’s nice to have a second opinion.

More Local News Sites

I’ve added several more local news sites to the /Home/News/US Local section of both the Wap Review Directory and to the YesWap portal. The directory contains all the wap site reviews organized by subject areas such as News, Sports, Entertainment or Technology. YesWap is a mobile portal containing links to all the sites in the directory arranged in the same subject area hierarchy for easy access on your mobile device. Mobile local news sites are a great way to keep … Continue reading

Webcams and i-Mode

I ran across a neat little mobile site called i-Mode Webcams which has links to fifty or so webcams around the world – mostly cityscapes and street scenes. Handy if you want to check the weather across the world or across the city. The images are scaled down to 120 pixels wide by default so they should work on just about any WAP2 phone. You can also specify a different width if your phone has a larger screen. You can … Continue reading
