MSN Mobile Video Update

A few days ago I wrote about Microsoft’s launch of MSN Mobile Video.  It’s a nice service with thousands of fresh, interesting clips from the full-web MSN Video library.  Unfortunately when I visited the site with a couple of video capable phones, the Nokia N95-3 and Motorola Z8, I got the message “We currently do not support Video on your device“. From that, I assumed that the site only offered videos in Windows Mobile format and suggested that if Microsoft … Continue reading

NYC’s Mobile Train Schedule

Mobile Train Schedule (mobiletrainschedule.com) is an interactive schedule for New York City’s three major commuter rail lines; The Long Island Railroad, New Jersey Transit and Metro-North.  This isn’t an official site, it seems to be an ad supported service from Actuan Mobile. The main feature is “Point to Point Train Times“, a simple schedule lookup (top image), where you pick the start and end stations from dropdowns, choose the time of departure and day of the week and get a … Continue reading

Supermarket Stalwart Woman’s Day is now Mobile

US shoppers are familiar with Woman’s Day magazine which is found on a rack at the checkout counter of virtually every grocery store, a marketing technique that Woman’s Day pioneered. The 72 year old magazine, which covers topics of interest to homemakers of both sexes such as food, entertaining, health, childcare and home decorating, has a new mobile edition.  Browser detection on the main womansday.com URL should deliver the mobile optimized version to phone browsers or you can go directly … Continue reading

Microsoft’s MSN Mobile Adds Video

Microsoft has added a page of mobile videos to the MSN Mobile portal.  There’s a Mobile Video link on mobile.msn.com or you can go directly to the video page at video.mobile.msn.com. The bad news is that the videos are only available in Windows Mobile Video format which means that for the most part they only work on Windows Mobile devices.  According to  Sevenval’s mobileWatch mobile analytics report,  only about 25% percent of the video capable phones in the world can … Continue reading

Opera Mini Users Can’t Access Orkut

Update 21-Aug-2008: This issue has been resolved.  Orkut is working again for Opera Mini users. Google’s Orkut social network is hugely popular in India. In fact, India ranks second in the number of Orkut members (after Brazil).  And many Indians use the Opera Mini browser to visit Orkut.  Of all nations, India ranks third in the number of Opera Mini users, after Russia and Indonesia, and Orkut is the second most popular site (after Google) among Indian Opera Mini users. … Continue reading

KeyToss Mobile Portal – Better than iGoogle?

KeyToss (m.keytoss.com) describes itself as a “Powerful, personalizable portal for smartphones“.  I think that’s a pretty good description.  The default KeyToss home page shows a search box offering a choice of search engines, current weather forecast, recent sports scores, stock quotes, a section of news headlines and about 20 well chosen links to frequently used information like movie show times and flight status. KeyToss is highly customizable.  without even registering, users can change their location and favorite teams, choose which … Continue reading

T-Mobile To Go’s Free Mobile Web

In the US at least, every subscriber to T-Mobile’s prepaid service gets free access to the mobile web. Before you get too excited I have to point out that it’s a walled garden and a small one at that. In the garden you can find the usual pricey carrier downloadable games and ringtones, view your plan’s prepaid balance and expiration date and add money to the account. But there’s more, T-Mobile gives prepaid users unlimited access to seven off-portal sites … Continue reading

World Wide Coverage Maps at GSMWorld.mobi

I spent my vacation last week roaming around the US Midwest including some time along the shores of Lake Michigan in Northeastern Wisconsin. It’s a beautiful area and the Northern latitude and breeze off the lake make it a lot more temperate than sweltering Chicago and Milwaukee. But it’s also an area were the nationwide GSM operators, ATT and T-Mobile, don’t have any towers.  My ATT GoPhone prepaid SIM was useless there but T-Mobile To Go, also prepaid, offers extensive … Continue reading
