Mopitopia – “Mobile Links That Don’t Suck”

Mobitopia 2.0 (mobitopia.com) is to the mobile web what del.icio.us is the the PC web, a place to store and share links to interesting sites. If you aren’t familiar with the huge Web 2.0 success that is del.icio.us, this Wikipedia article will get you up to speed. Mobitopia’s motto is “Mobile Links That Don’t Suck (TM)“. Seeing as anyone can register and post public links to the site there’s also the admonishment, “Please don’t add mobile links just to add … Continue reading

Socialight – Geocoded Stickynotes

I saw an interesting video on PSFK.COM. It was a demo of a newish LBS mobile web service called Socialight which is based around sticky notes (aka Post-it’s ™) that are tied to a particular location. Users create the free-form notes to scribble their impressions of a restaurant or club, as either a private reminder to self, a “Meet me here” note visible only to friends or as a shared bit of knowledge viewable by anyone. What really caught my … Continue reading

Zedge Mobile Reviewed

I want to follow up on yesterday’s piece about IDT’s aquisition of Zedge.net, a mobile social software (MoSoSo) site that slipped under my radar to become a market leader. Initially, I was surprised at how little there is to Zedge’s mobile (wml) site wap.zedge.net. All you can do there is download the files that you have added to your account from the PC site. There is no messaging, chat or ability to view another user’s profile or any social features … Continue reading

Zedge – 3.5 Million User MoSoSo

I got a tip from a reader that mobile social and file sharing site (MOSOSO), Zedge.net was being acquired by multinational telecom conglomerate IDT. I can’t confirm that this is accurate so take it as an unfounded rumor. I’d never heard of Zedge or IDT so I did a little digging. Mashable was apparently also tipped and has a post up. Update: The IDT – Zedge deal is real. Announcement here. I also heard from Fabio Pezzotti at Mobango and … Continue reading

Mobango – Mobile File Sharing

Mobango is a very popular mobile file sharing site. After registering at the PC site mobango.com, you can upload ringtones, wallpapers, videos and java apps from your PC to Mobango and them download then to your phone from the Mobango mobile site wap.mobango.com (wml browser required). When you upload a file you can flag it as either public or private. Any registered user can download public files which currently number over 200,000. Treemo

Treemo is a new social content sharing site which combines most of the features of YouTube and Flickr with a strong mobile web presence. Treemo allows users to upload and share video, audio, text and images. The site’s free account has much more generous upload and storage limits than Flickr’s. Treemo allows uploading 200 MB per month, ten times as much as Flickr. In addition Flickr limits free accounts to displaying only the 200 most recent images. Treemo doesn’t limit … Continue reading

Mob5

Mob5 isn’t really a pure Mobile Social Software (MoSoSo) site although it bears some similarities to one. I’d call it a forms driven mobile site builder and free mobile hosting service. It lets you build a site to share your writing and photos. There’s a comment form that you can add as a “wall” or shout-box were anyone can leave (and read) comments. Mob5 is good for building a site where your friends can look at your photos or writing … Continue reading

MocoSpace

I’m already tried of the phrase “Web 2.0”. It’s time for a new buzzword. Still, the big paradigm shift of Web 2.0 and one that’s here to stay is the idea that users and especially communities of users are what gives the web value. That can mean sharing of user generated content such as photos (Flickr), writing (Yelp, blogs), or the collective wisdom of what’s click-worthy (del.icio.us, Digg, YouTube). All these sites also accept comments which is a starting point … Continue reading
