How to Add Search Engines To Opera Mini 5

One thing that new users of Opera Mini seem to have trouble with is adding custom search engines. Questions about adding search engines come up all the time on the Opera Mini Forum.  It’s easy to understand why, the process is not hard but it’s also not particularly intuitive or obvious and neither the official Opera Mini FAQ or the in-app help explain it. To fill the gap, I’ve created this little tutorial with images for both the touch screen … Continue reading

Opera Mini, Bolt and UC Browser On Bada Phones!

Samsung’s Dolfin browser on the Wave bada phone is a good one  in most respects. It loads pages quickly,  has excellent JavaScript performance and supports geo-location and many HTML5 features. But I found it unusable with many desktop sites because the fonts are too small to read at the zoom level where text columns fit the screen. When you zoom in text doesn’t reflow and you have to scroll horizontally to read which I find intolerable. Thanks to a reader … Continue reading

Opera Mini 5.1 for Android’s Saved State Soups Up Multitasking On The G1 and Magic

Opera Mini for Android dropped the Beta tag with the release of Opera Mini 5.1 today. The new version brings a number of bug fixes and enhancements to Opera Mini on Google’s smartphone platform. The most significant improvement is that when Opera Mini  gets closed in the background by the Android OS it now saves its complete state, including the contents of all open tabs and the browsing history.  Android is very aggressive about closing apps that are in the … Continue reading

Opera Mini 5.1 – Better Performance on Low End Devices And A Hint Of Future Location Support!

Today,  Opera Software released a new 5.1 version of Opera Mini.  The main feature of  this release is that it’s been optimized to work well on low end phones with screens less than 200 px wide or under 4 MB of Java Heap memory. The optimization was accomplished mainly with a new lighter weight user interface that uses text rather than icons for the “Speed Dial” start page and dispenses with some of the icons in menus.  The light UI … Continue reading

New Opera Mini 5 Release Fixes RTL, DST and Text Entry Bugs

Today the Opera Mini Blog announced a “silent” release of Opera Mini.  I’m not sure how anything announced on the corporate blog is silent, but no matter this appears to be a pretty significant release. It adds 32 new languages and fixes several notable bugs, specifically: RSS feed links should now appear at the top of pages again. RTL (Right To Left) languages (Arabic, Hebrew, Urdu, etc. ) should now display properly on phones with supported fonts. Problems with daylight … Continue reading

Crazy News Day: Opera Mini Approved for the iPhone!!

The last 18 or so hours have been crazy with announcements in the mobile world. Opera Mini was approved for the iPhone, Nokia announced three new QWERTY phones at impressively low price points and there’s a new Bolt browser release. I don’t think anyone expected that Apple would approve the Opera Mini iPhone app. But the app store rules are so vague and approval process so opaque that you can never predict what Apple will bless and what they won’t. … Continue reading
