WapReview.mobi Enhancement

I’ve added a little improvement to this blog’s mobile.site, WapReview.mobi. When click a link to a non-mobile site, the screen on the right appears giving you an opportunity to view the site using a transcoder. Pressing the ‘5’ key will launch the non-mobile site in the Google transcoder. You can also use Mowser, Skweezer or no transcoder at all if you prefer or if Google errors out on the site as sometimes happens with any transcoder. You should only see … Continue reading

Tribes – Mobile Web Channel Surfing

I just discovered Alatto‘s Tribes (gb.tribes.cc/globalen), although it’s been around since at least June, 2005. It’s a bit like a mobile Slashdot but with a wrinkle. Actually, I almost gave up on Tribes when the first thing I saw upon entering the site was a confusing message warning that the site contains “explict” content and that I must be over 18 to view this content and did I agree with the “above conditions“. My first though was “mobile porn site“. … Continue reading

New Skweezer Version

All the buzz about Opera Mini must be frustrating for the 84 million users on US BREW carriers like Verizon, Alltel, US Cellular, Metro PCS or Cricket. Phones on these networks can’t run Java applications like Opera Mini, the amazing free browser that lets you use any website on mainstream phones. Using a mobile transcoder offers a viable alternative to Opera Mini and works on any data enabled phone that has a browser. Transcoders take big web pages designed for … Continue reading

Opera Mini 4 Beta

I’ve had a few hours using the beta and I have to say I’m impressed with what Opera’s done. This new version of Opera Mini has the feature set and rendering quality of browsers like Nokia’s Webkit, Opera Mobile 8.65 or Safari on the iPhone and it’s faster too. Unlike those browsers which only run on $500 Smartphones, Opera Mini works on almost any phone including $30 prepaid phones and the “free” phones you get with a contract. There’s been … Continue reading

Opera Mini Dimension is Live

I woke up this morning to find that the Opera Mini 4.0 beta, aka Dimension, has been released. I’ve got to get to my day job so no review yet. I’ll try to post my first impressions tonight. In the meantime, try it yourself, click on the Dimension button in the sidebar to go to the release site for videos, information and downloads. Disclaimer: Opera Software is a sponsor of this site.

My New Toy – MotoRIZR Z8

Last month I went to a UIQ Developer Fast Track event in San Francisco. I haven’t done any UIQ development but was curious about the platform. The Fast Track turned out to be more of a high level introduction which was OK with me. Actually the main draw was that attendees were promised a UIQ 3 phone. Half got a Sony Ericsson M600i immediately, the other half would have the Z8 shipped to them “when it was released”. I was … Continue reading

Taptu

Taptu has launched. The mobile URL is taptu.mobi. You’ve probably heard about it, Vero and the rest of team have been doing a great job of creating buzz. In case you missed the previews by beta testers like Msearchgroove and SymbianGuru, Taptu in a nutshell is a new mobile search engine specializing in music search (songs, lyrics, artists, video and audio clips). Their tagline is “A new kind of search engine for mobile phones which allows you to search and … Continue reading
