The Carnival of the Mobilists #43

It’s Carnival time again. That’s the Carnival of the Mobilists of course, the weekly showcase of the best contributed writing on mobile topics. This week’s host is Steve Litchfield at 3-lib. If you aren’t familiar with 3-lib you really should be, particularly if you’re a Symbian Smartphone user as 3-lib is probably the largest collection of Symbian and Psion software and lore on the web. 3-lib also hosts Steve’s The Smartphones Show video podcast. The Carnival this week has a … Continue reading

YoMoBlog

I’m trying out YoMoBlog, a very cool mobile blogging tool from Dave Winer. It works with lots of blogging platforms including WordPress and Type Pad. As it’s mobile web based with a page size of only 7kb, it’s compatible with most phones. YoMoBlog really shines when used with a device with a QWERTY keyboard. I wrote and posted the lead paragraph of this item with my Moto i855 – but not being a demon texter I wouldn’t want to write … Continue reading

34.6 Million US Mobile Web Users

There were 34.6 US mobile web users as of June, 2006 according to a recent report. The numbers are in a press release (pdf), announcing the Telephia Mobile Internet Report. The full report is available only to Telephia’s clients who are “leading Mobile Operators, Device Manufacturers, and Content Companies”. The numbers in the press release say a lot about the current state of the mobile web but being just highlights of the full report they raise questions too. You can’t … Continue reading

Carnival of the Mobilists #42

This week’s Carnival has a new host, MobileActive.org, a site devoted to exploring and promoting the use of mobile phones in political action campaigns. As usual, the Carnival contains lots of fresh new articles on mobile technology, marketing and societal impact. I’m pleased that one of my posts was included. From all the great posts this week, the host picked one by Scott Shaffer, better known as The Pondering Primate. as the Post of the Week – congratulations Scott. Visit … Continue reading

Russell Buckley from MobHappy together with FreeRange Comunications have created a special Carnival of the Mobilists Mobile RSS Reader. The reader is a free version of FreeRange’s FreeReader which costs $20/year. The Carnival Reader is preconfigured to keep you synced up with 15 of the bloggers who contribute regularly in the Carnival of the Mobilists. I’m pleased that this blog is one of 15. There’s more about the reader at the Mobilist’s Site. You can download the Java ME Reader … Continue reading

61st Vuelta a España

Updated 8/26/2006: Velonews IS offering live reports from the Vuelta on both the full web at www.velonews.com/live and the mobile web at www.velonews.com/live_mobile. The BBC is not doing live coverage. The cycling Tour of Spain starts tomorrow under the ominous cloud of the back to back doping revelations of Operación Puerto followed by l’affaire Landis. I don’t know who’s guilty and who isn’t but I do know that professional cycling’s reputation is in the dumps. Maybe I’m dreaming but I … Continue reading

Off Portal Mobile Streaming Video

This post is no longer updated: For a current list of mobile video sites please visit the WapReview Directory’s Mobile Video Page. Sean Berner tipped me about his mobile streaming video site ZooVision. It’s pretty neat and to me represents the beginning of a trend – off portal streaming video. But first a disclaimer, I don’t have a phone that is capable of handing streaming media – so this review is based on browsing ZooVision and similar sites on a … Continue reading

The 41st Carnival Of The Mobilists

Justin Oberman’s hosting the latest Carnival at mopocket. You’ll enjoy Justin’s original and rather funny introduction to the Carnival. Once again there is much good reading in the Carnival. I particularly liked Kevin Evan’s item about Sprint PCS’ WiMax plans, Tam Hanna’s analysis of what’s happening with Palm, Access and the forthcoming Linux based Access/Palmsource OS and Rudy De Waele’s Connecting Cultures Through Music, which Justin chose as Post of the Week. But that’s just me, there are over a … Continue reading
