Play Chess on the Mobile Web

I just discovered a nice mobile site that lets you play computer chess on just about any phone with a mobile browser. It’s called Caramba! and the URL is m.mountmobile.com. When you vist the site it displays a chessboard and prompts you for your move.  Moves are entered using a simplfied form of chess notation  where you specify the from: file and row followed by the to: file and row.  For example “c2c4” means move the piece on file c, row 2 … Continue reading

The Official Wikipedia Mobile

Since the early days of wml-only WAP, Wikipedia’s content has been available in mobile format through a variety of third party sites.   Wikipedia’s “Mobile Access” page lists nine that are currently active plus Wikipedia’s own official mobile site at mobile.wikipedia.org. The official site was launched in June 2007 but is new to me. I’ve been using  Wapedia.mobi since shortly after it launched in 2004. I really like Wapedia.  It’s fast, always up and does an outstanding job of adapting Wikipedia content to … Continue reading

It’s full of interesting, high quality photographs and maps too. The Society also produces films and television programs, hosts a popular website at nationalgeographic.com and operates the National Geographic Channel on cable TV.   Earlier this year the Society added a  National Geographic Channel … Continue reading

Don’t Break Mobile Thematic Consistency

Updated 12-Dec-2008 Added clarification of how the MoFuse plugin works. In the jargon of mobile web development “thematic consistency” means that if you visit the same URL with different devices you should see more or less the same content.  It may be formatted differently, images may be smaller or missing and long pages split up when viewed with a mobile browser, but the essential theme of the page should be the same on all devices. For example, if you write … Continue reading

Delicious.com Goes Mobile

Yahoo owned social bookmarking site delicious.com launched a mobile web version yesterday.  It’s at m.delicious.com.  The mobile site is a pretty basic read-only affair, it doesn’t even seem possible to add a bookmark using the mobile version.  What mobile Delicious does provide is a low bandwidth view of your bookmarks, inbox, tags, subscriptions, network and the top 10  URLs as defined by “Delicious Popular”.   You can browse your bookmarks by tag and search for a tag.  The site works well … Continue reading
