Verizon Using Novarra’s Transcoder

The largest US mobile carrier, Verizon Wireless has started funneling traffic between Verizon feature phones and the  web through a transcoder from Novarra.  Verizon calls the service “Optimized View” and has added promotional information and a FAQ to their customer website  There is also a page on the carrier’s developer site which has links to a opt-out form and to a  PDF document detailing the rules that the transcoder uses to determine which sites to transcode. Usability Flaws Mar Mobile Tickets.Com

Tickets.com, a major online ticket broker owned by MLB.com (Major League Baseball)  has launched a mobile version of their service at mobile.tickets.com. Tickets.com handles tickets for events around the world ranging from chamber music concerts to professional wrestling. The mobile site uses a two-level hierarchical menu with top level categories of “Sports”, “Concerts”, “Arts” and “Family Events” each of which is divided into a dozen or more additional categories. New Opera Mini Beta Available

Opera has released a Beta of Version 4.2 of the popular Opera Mini browser.  Opera Mini is a free Java ME browser that brings full-web browsing to hundreds of phone models including most inexpensive feature phones. First Interstate – Mobile Banking Security Using SMS

First Interstate Bank, a regional bank with 50 locations and 100 ATMs in Montana and Wyoming, has launched a mobile banking site at firstinterstate.mobi. The bank is doing a good job of promoting the site with a prominent ad on their web home page and an extensive video tutorial.
