UC Browser’s “Blank Screen” Bug Fixed

It’s been quite a while since I’ve written about the UC Browser (formerly UCWEB).  It’s a proxy based browser similar in concept to Opera Mini. The company behind the UC Browser, UC Mobile Limited, is based in Guangzhou, China and  UC is the most popular mobile browser in China, claiming over 100 million users. The company is venture funded with investors including Ceyuan Ventures, Morningside Group,  Alibaba Group and most recently Nokia. I’ve been a fan of the UC browser … Continue reading

Opera Mini, Bolt and UC Browser On Bada Phones!

Samsung’s Dolfin browser on the Wave bada phone is a good one  in most respects. It loads pages quickly,  has excellent JavaScript performance and supports geo-location and many HTML5 features. But I found it unusable with many desktop sites because the fonts are too small to read at the zoom level where text columns fit the screen. When you zoom in text doesn’t reflow and you have to scroll horizontally to read which I find intolerable. Thanks to a reader … Continue reading

How To Keep Ads From Breaking Your Mobile Pages

I try to build mobile sites that work on everything from an old wml-only browsers to iPhones and the latest Android “Superphone”.  It’s more work but I believe it’s worthwhile. Supporting more devices brings in more traffic and hopefully makes users of old devices smile when they find a site that actually works on their phones. I use adaptation to vary page and image sizes and MIME types to suit the capabilities of various devices. BlackBerrys, iPhones and most modern  … Continue reading

Amazing Hack – Bejeweled As A Symbian Webapp

If you have a Nokia Symbian S60 3rd or 5th edition phone  you’ve got to try apps.cellz.in/crack/ It’s a game called “Crack IT!“, a  faithful reimplementation of the classic Bejeweled game in HTML and JavaScript that runs entirely in the browser. Playability is excellent on my N95 and there are even game sounds and animated hints showing you potential moves. I had no idea that the much maligned Nokia webkit browser was capable of such a sophisticated user interface and … Continue reading

Ovi Browser, First Look – With Download Links

Nokia’s Beta Labs introduced a Beta of the Ovi Browser Wednesday.  It’s based on the Vision browser from Novarra, which Nokia acquired five months ago. The Ovi browser is a proxy based browser, similar to Opera Mini. It renders and transcodes web pages on a server before sending them to the phone client in a highly compressed format. Nokia claims that the compression reduces web traffic by up to 90%. The Ovi browser supports the Nokia 2700 Classic, Nokia 2730 … Continue reading
