Ovi App Store Presentation in Mt. View Today

I’m going to an Ovi App Store presentation today in the Silicon Valley.  I’m hoping to learn more about the program; how it will work for developers, what the store will look like for users on different devices, timeline for rollout, etc. What I’ve heard: Both free and paid apps will be accepted Initially the store will be available on the N97 only, eventually it will be extended to most S60 and S40 devices. Users can pay with a credit … Continue reading

UCWEB and Opera Mini Old Versions

While it’s generally best to run the latest versions of applications sometimes you can’t because they just don’t work.  This can happen if you are using an old or low memory device that doesn’t have enough resources or the right Java JSR to run the current versions.  A while back I posted links to old versions of Gmail.  To find those I had to do a  lot of digging through old forum posts and trying different google.com URLs to find … Continue reading

Fast Company Goes Mobile But Where Are The Videos?

Fast Company is a print and online business magazine focused on technology, innovation and social responsibility.  And now there’s a mobile version of Fast Company at m.fastcompany.com. It seems to include almost all the articles fromFast Company’s full-web site. The mobile web design, which is by Crisp Wireless, generally does a good job of resizing images and splitting up pages so that the site works on anything from the iPhone to old wml-only devices. A lot of mobile web development … Continue reading

iTouch Has Bluetooth?

One of the most interesting things to come out of the Q&A session at the iPhone OS 3.0 launch was a statement that the latest iPhone touch contains Bluetooth radio hardware that Apple can enable with a firmware update.  If you missed it it’s at 11:43 AM in gdgt.com’s live launch coverage. I doubt that that Apple would ever enable the dial up networking profile.  But if they did you could tether an  iTouch to a cheap feature phone on … Continue reading

iPhone 3.0 – What’s it mean for Nokia and Palm?

At the iPhone OS 3.0 announcement today,  Apple reacted to its growing competition from S60 touch devices, Android and Palm Pre by announcing a massive upgrade. 3.0 will ship “this summer”  and a Beta is available today to all registered iPhone developers.  What Apple has done is to fill in  most of the feature gaps in the iPhone spec.  This is important.  While the iPhone design language and user interface have been head and shoulders above the competition since day … Continue reading

Carnival of the Mobilists #165

This week’s Carnival is hosted by Vanessa Measoma  at VisionMobile.  In typical blog carnival style it highlights and links to the best recent blog posts on mobile topics from around the web. Lot’s of talk in this Carnival about App Stores but other aspects of mobility are not neglected.  There are pieces on mobile design, network technologies, mobile startup strategies for dealing with network operators and Google’s latest rollouts; Google Voice and “behavioural” search targeting. Congradulations to Ajit Jaokar for … Continue reading

Redesigned Zedge Mobile Is Not “Dumbed Down”

It’s been a while since I’ve looked at Zedge.net, the huge (13 million users, Alexa rank 492)  mobile content sharing network.   Owned by IDT, Zedge is primarily a place where users can upload content (ringtones, themes, wallpapers and videos) for sharing and transfer to their phones. A big part of Zedge is content creation. The site has easy to use online tools for making and modifying ringtones, themes, wallpapers and screensavers and the busy Zedge support forums help new users … Continue reading
