New Opera Mobile 10.1 Is Fast and (Mostly) Stable On the N8

The non-Beta version of Opera Mobile 10.1 for Symbian was released today.  It supports S60 3rd Edition, S60 5th edition (aka Symbian^1) and Symbian^3 devices. Like all of the Opera 10 Symbian variants, it needs a fair amount of free RAM, at least 40 MB and  70 MB or more  for best results. Download it from opera.com/mobile/download/ or m.opera.com (mobile). The main changes in this release are said to be increased stability and more localized versions.  There’s a  full change … Continue reading

Opera Mobile for Android

I finally got a chance to try the  Android Beta version of Opera Mobile 10.1 that was released last week.  It’s available in the Android Market for devices running Android OS 1.6 and later.  There’s a special Android OS 1.5 build that’s only available directly from Opera. If you never used Opera Mobile before the first thing you will notice is that it’s look and feel are almost identical to that of Opera Mini.  Appearances are deceiving in this case … Continue reading

Opera Mobile 10.1 Symbian Beta 2 – Much Improved JavaScript Performance

Today Opera Software released a new Beta of Opera Mobile 10.1 for Symbian^1, Symbian^3 and Symbian 3rd Edition phones. Download Beta 2 at m.opera.com/next.  The main feature of the new release is the addition of the Carakan JavaScript engine’s Just In Time (JIT) compiler. Opera claims the new compiler makes JavaScript execution up to four times faster. I tested that claim by running the popular Sunspider JavaScript benchmark on a Nokia N95-3, first with Opera Mini 10.1 Beta 1 and … Continue reading

The E73 Browser Dissected

This is a continuation of my Nokia E73 “Mode” reveiew. Here’s a look at the built in WebKit based Nokia browser. I’ve been using an N95-3 as my main phone for years so I’m pretty familiar with the Symbian browser.  But  the browser in  Feature Pack 2 (FP2) devices like  the E73 is quite a bit newer.  The E73’s is version 7.2, based on  WebKit; 525. The N95’s browser is based on the much older  WebKit 413.  Here’s the full … Continue reading

It’s been “coming soon” for the better part of a year but the English language version of China’s UC Browser for Android landed earlier this week.  Was it worth the wait? Only you can decide but read on for my impressions of the newest Android browser. UC Browser (formerly UCWEB) is a proxy based browser like Opera Mini,  Bolt and the Symbian and WinMo versions of Skyfire. It  renders, reformats and compresses web pages on a UC server before sending … Continue reading

UC Browser’s “Blank Screen” Bug Fixed

It’s been quite a while since I’ve written about the UC Browser (formerly UCWEB).  It’s a proxy based browser similar in concept to Opera Mini. The company behind the UC Browser, UC Mobile Limited, is based in Guangzhou, China and  UC is the most popular mobile browser in China, claiming over 100 million users. The company is venture funded with investors including Ceyuan Ventures, Morningside Group,  Alibaba Group and most recently Nokia. I’ve been a fan of the UC browser … Continue reading
