Symbian lives! Opera Software and UC Browser have both released new browser versions for the Symbian platform. That makes sense as Symbian’s installed base is still around 190 million,  making it the third largest smartphone platform after iOS and Android in terms of current active users. Opera Mini 7 for Symbian Update 2 Released

The Opera Mini Browser for Symbian has been updated. The new release is designated as Opera Mini 7.0 Update 2 for Symbian. The version number is 7.0.31380. Update 2 is a performance and bug fix release, there are no new features. UC Browser 8.5 for Symbian Reviewed

UC Browser 8.5 for Symbian  was released a few weeks ago.  UC is a proxy based browser similar to Opera Mini. Proxy browsers pre-render and compress pages in the cloud before they are downloaded to the mobile client, which makes them particularly suited to basic phones, slow networks and anywhere that mobile data is expensive. Opera Software released an updated version of Opera Mini 7.0 for Symbian last week. It’s dubbed “Opera Mini 7.0 Update 1 for Symbian” or version 7.0.30697 and includes bug fixes and performance enhancements but no new features. Opera Software has just announced the availability of version 7.0 of the Opera Mini browser for Java ME, BlackBerry and Symbian S60 second edition and latter including all Nokia Belle devices. The latest UC Browser version 8.4 for Symbian S60 3rd. Edition  and S60 5th Edition is now available for download at wap.ucweb.com (mobile) and www.ucweb.com (PC) The 5th Edition version also works on Symbian Anna and Belle. A new Beta, a.k.a “Next”, version of Opera Mini,  labeled “Opera Mini Next for Symbian/S60 – update 1″, is now available for Symbian 2nd edition and latter devices. Download it by pointing your Symbian native browser at m.opera.com/next.  The update  fixes a number of the bugs in the first release.
