Marriott Mobile Recommends Opera Mini

In the past, I’ve been pretty critical of mobile web hotel booking sites. Horrible usability, errors caused by invalid markup or excessively large pages and the inability to easily complete a booking have pretty much stymied every attempt I’ve made to book a room using the mobile web. Finding and booking a room for the night using your phone should be a no brainer. Actually it’s pretty easy if you just call the 800 number of one of the big … Continue reading

Mobile Browser Test – UCWEB6

This is the second in a series of posts comparing free add-on full-web mobile browsers.  If you missed the first one, covering TeaShark vs. Opera Mini it’s here. Here’s a look at UCWEB, Version 6.  This browser comes from  Guangzhou Ucfly Company in Guangzhou, China.  I couldn’t find out much about this company other than what’s on their web page. Ucfly has partnerships with China Mobile and Chinese search engine Baidu.  According to the company, UCWEB has been downloaded 11 … Continue reading

Browser Comparison – TeaShark vs Opera

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Opera Mini, the free full-web browser that makes it possible you use almost any website on most any phone. Amazingly, using sites designed for an 800×600 px screen on one a tenth as large is both practical and  pleasant in Opera Mini, thanks its combination of server side compression, smart reformatting techniques like content folding and fit to width and a brilliant user interface built a around one and two-click shortcuts … Continue reading

Orkut is Back for Opera Mini Users!

It looks like the week long Orkut outage for Opera Mini users is over. jbpseudo just left a comment saying it was working again. I just tried and got right into Orkut.  This should make a lot of folks happy, especially in Brazil and India where most of Orkut’s traffic comes from.  As jbpseudo said;  thank you, Google, Opera Mini and especially ManneS, the Opera Mini forum moderator and user advocate who I suspect played a big role in escalating … Continue reading

Opera Mini Users Can’t Access Orkut

Update 21-Aug-2008: This issue has been resolved.  Orkut is working again for Opera Mini users. Google’s Orkut social network is hugely popular in India. In fact, India ranks second in the number of Orkut members (after Brazil).  And many Indians use the Opera Mini browser to visit Orkut.  Of all nations, India ranks third in the number of Opera Mini users, after Russia and Indonesia, and Orkut is the second most popular site (after Google) among Indian Opera Mini users. … Continue reading

Opera Mini on the Samsung Instinct

US CDMA carrier, Sprint PCS released its answer to the iPhone on June 20th. It’s called the Samsung Instinct (SCH-M800) and while it’s no match for the iPhone it’s still a nice device in many respects. With a large (but smaller than the iPhone’s) 3.1 inch touch screen with haptic feedback, no physical keyboard, threaded voicemail and SMS and a full-web browser, the Instinct matches some of the best known features of Apple’s phone and even has a few things … Continue reading

Serve Mobile or Full Content to Full-Web Mobile Browsers?

The distinction between the mobile web and the “full” web is getting fuzzy. We have millions of phones running full-web browsers such as Opera, Safari, S60Webkit and NetFront that can display almost any web site.  Not only can these browsers handle JavaScript but the latest S60WebKit can play Flash .flv videos in the browser and it plus Opera Mobile 8.65 and 9.5 do a decent job with AJAX pages. Web developers should be asking “Which version of my pages should … Continue reading

Orkut Forcing Opera Mini to Mobile Version

It looks like Google’s Orkut has pulled a Friendster and is forcing Opera Mini users to the mobile version of the site. There’s nothing wrong with using browser detection to redirect mobile browsers to a mobile friendly site BUT there needs to be a way to get to the full version if desired. Many of today’s mobile browsers including Opera Mini and Mobile, some versions of Netfront and S60 Webkit are capable of loading almost any site on the web. … Continue reading
