New Opera Mobile and Mini Betas – New Features, Fixes and Reduced Memory Usage

Wowser! Opera Software released a second Beta of both Opera Mobile 10 and Opera Mini 5 today.  I really didn’t expect a new release until after the holidays.  I’ve been playing with the new versions for about an hour now and I like what I see. Here are my impressions. The big changes are the addition of some of the most requested features that were missing from the first Beta Opera Link which synchronizes bookmarks, speed dial shortcuts and custom … Continue reading

Hands-On With the ATT.NET (Opera Mini) Browser

I spent some time recently playing with the AT&T branded version of Opera Mini that the operator is using as its default browser on at least four new devices.  The Pantech Reveal, released earlier this month, is the  first phone with the new browser. AT&T seemes to have overlooked WapReview again in handing out review units to bloggers so I had to try the Reveal out at my local AT&T shop. The new browser is branded as att.net. Opera’s name … Continue reading

Updated: Mobile Browser Speed Test – Opera Mini 4.2 vs 5 vs Bolt 1.5

Updated: The Google.co.uk speed tests of Opera Mini were run against the mobile version rather than the desktop version as intended. Rerunning against the desktop version of the Google site increased the times recorded for both browsers. Opera Mini 5 went from 2.7 to 6 seconds and Opera Mini 4’s time increased from 2.3 seconds to 3 seconds. The table and graph have been updated with the new values. I’ve run some speed tests on the new Opera Mini 5 … Continue reading

Bolt Browser 1.5 Review – Great Rendering, Copy/Paste, But Still a Few Warts

I’ve been using Bolt’s new 1.5 release for a few days now and here are my impressions. In general Bolt works very well on main phone, a Nokia N95-3.  In fact, this is the first version of Bolt that I consider good enough to use as my main browser. Here are my likes and dislikes. Likes: Excellent page rendering.  Most sites look great in Bolt, fonts are particularly attractive, clean looking and readable.  Unlike Opera Mini (image below, left), italic … Continue reading

Updated: Read PDF’s On Your Phone With Opera Mini 5

Updated 19-Oct-2009 -Added pdfdownload.org and Serola’s mobile PDF conversion form. After Adobe Flash, I think the second biggest mobile browsing annoyance is  the PDF file format, which most mobile browsers can’t display. Thanks to Opera Mini and the ingenuity of the mobile user community it is now possible to view PDFs on most phones.  The process is a bit tedious but if you really need to read a particular PDF on your phone it works. The idea is to grab … Continue reading

Today On The Mobile Web

I’m going to try to post  the top mobile web and mobile data related stories and buzz that I find on the web.  I’ll keep these posts short, only a few links and cryptic commentary so as not to bore everyone to tears. Here are today’s top stories: Opera’s July State of the Mobile Web Report – 29.1 million Opera Mini users in July, up 9.9% from last month and 145% from July 08. New Skyfire 1.1 Release The only … Continue reading

About a month ago All About Symbian‘s  Rafe Blandford published an extensive set of browser speed test results. Rafe compared page load times for ten well known US and UK sites using eght different Nokia S30 3rd and 5th editon devices plus the T-Mobile G1, iPhone 3G, Skyfire and Opera Mini.  Latter Matthew Miller at Smartphones and Cellphones updated Rafe’s data with numbers for the iPhone 3GS and Opera Mobile 9.7.  Rafe and Matthew’s data showed that smartphone browsers are … Continue reading

Get More From Your BlackBerry with Opera Mini

If you have a BlackBerry and aren’t using Opera Mini 4.2 you are missing out on what is in my opinion, the best BlackBerry application.  Mini is a small (under 170KB) application that implements a full html web browser that rivals and in many cases exceeds the performance of the best smartphone browsers. And yes that includes Safari on the iPhone. Compared with the built-in BlackBerry browser, especially on older models like my 7100i, Mini is so overwhelmingly superior that … Continue reading
