AOL Mobile Web – Part 2

This piece concludes the AOL Mobile review I started last month. Part one covered AOL’s search features. To recap, I dissed the web search because it doesn’t search the mobile web. AOL’s local search has some nice features but doesn’t sort results by distance or rating. I also found it slow. Lately the speed seems much better, still not a rocket but at least competitive. Shopping search was promising with product specifications, reviews, photos and ratings. Prices were given but … Continue reading

T-Mobile Blocking Java Apps?

It looks like T-Mobile USA has just made it harder to use data aware Java applications like Opera Mini, Google Maps and gMail on the $5.99 (and grandfathered $4.99 and $2.99) T-MobileWeb unlimited data plans. While some users are saying T-Mobile is blocking Java, I think they are just requiring the use of the T-Mobile proxy to get to the Internet. Java applications should be able to use the proxy but on many phones, especially recent T-Mobile branded ones, there … Continue reading

Newsvine Mobile

Newsvine is a popular, user driven news site. It works a little like Digg in that stories are submitted and voted on by members. But Newsvine is much mellower and more focused than Digg. The site’s Code of Honor stresses respect for others, relevance and avoiding sensationalism. The code seems to be followed remarkably well making the site a fine online news source covering US and world news, sports, tech, business, health and entertainment. The site’s front page has top … Continue reading

Carnival 72 at 3-Lib

Thanks to Steve Litchfield for hosting this weeks Carnival of the Mobilists at his Psion/Symbian themed site, 3-Lib. I’ve been reading 3-Lib for at least 6 years but was amazed to learn that the site goes back to 1994! As for the Carnival, each edition seems better than the last, as always it has the web’s best posts on mobile topics.
