The T-Mobile Astound’s (Nokia C7) PR 2.0 Browser and Email App

WOMWORLD/Nokia lent me the new T-Mobile Astound (aka Nokia C7) which I’ve been using as my main device here at CTIA for the last 36 hours. Here are my impressions. The most exciting thing about the C7 is brand new firmware. It’s custom firmware for T-Mobile that’s “almost” PR 2.0 in that it has most of the features of of the much anticipated PR 2.0 firmware for Symbian^3. The Nokia reps I’ve spoken to insist that the new firmware isn’t … Continue reading

CTIA is Wild This Year and it Hasn’t Even Started Yet.

I’m at the big CTIA Wireless trade show in Orlando this week as the guest of WOMWorld/Nokia.  The event doesn’t start until tomorrow but, thanks to a couple of huge pre-show announcements, it’s already shaping up as an especially interesting show this year. Yesterday, AT&T announced that it is acquiring  T-Mobile USA.  The match-up, if it passes regulatory review, would make AT&T the largest US operator. As a long time satisfied T-Mobile customer who also briefly used AT&T a few years … Continue reading

Nokia E7 Unboxing Gallery

I’ve took some unboxing photos of the E7 trial device that WOMWorld/Nokia sent me. Click the thumbnails below to view full size. The most remarkable feature of this particular E7 is the custom slip cover personalized with a Tweet from me about the E7 (pasted into a text message on the E7 screen). The cover is also signed by Nokia’s new CEO, Steven Elop. Sliding off the slip cover reveals the normal retail box. I understand that a number of … Continue reading

Moving From Twitter to Identi.ca – Mobile Clients

On Friday Ryan Sarver, Twitter’s Product Manager for the Platform / API team dropped a bomb on third party Twitter app developers with a post on the “Twitter API Announcement” Google Group that included the chilling line “…developers ask us if they should build client apps that mimic or reproduce the mainstream Twitter consumer client experience,” he wrote. The answer is no.” Sarver’s statement was echoed  by recent changes in Twitter’s terms of service. Techcrunch did a comparison of the … Continue reading

Nokia E7 First Impressions

Click image to enlarge I received a Nokia E7 for review yesterday from WOMWorld/Nokia. I’ve been looking forward to some extensive hands on with this phone since I first saw it at Tech.Ed in Berlin last October. I got quite a surprise when I ripped off the wrapping and saw the box’s custom slip wrapper. It looked like regular Nokia packaging with an image of the E7 on the front. But the phone’s screen was displaying a Tweet I sent … Continue reading

Hands On With Opera’s New In-Browser Mobile App Store

Yesterday, Norway’s Opera Software announced the release of the Opera Mobile Store (image top right), a cross platform app store for Android, BlackBerry, Java, Symbian and legacy Palm OS and Windows Mobile devices. The store is a mobile web app at mobilestore.opera.com.  It was created in partnership with Appia (formerly PocketGear) and includes both free and paid apps.  When I tried it the only payment option available was by credit card. Publishers receive 70% of  net sales revenue (after taxes … Continue reading

Update: sometime after this item was published, Microsoft fixed the bug discussed here that caused links to items on Microsoft corporate blogs to retun HTTP 404 (Not Found) errors when accessed with mobile browsers. -> Last week Microsoft announced the launch of Bing Deals, a Groupon inspired feature of Bing Search.  Created in partnership with The Deal Map, Bing Deals aggregates money saving offers in your area from Groupon, Living Social, Restaurant.com and other sites.
