Opera Mobile 10 Beta for Windows Phone Released

Good news for Windows Mobile (a.k.a. Windows Phone) users, Opera’s newest browser, Opera Mobile 10 is now available for the Classic and Professional editions of Windows Mobile 6.5, Windows Mobile 6.1, Windows Mobile 6.0 and on Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC.  I don’t have a Windows phone so I can’t try this myself but I have been using Opera Mobile 10 as the main browser on my Nokia N95-3 for the last two weeks and I recommend that you give … Continue reading

New Mobile Bookmarklet – View PDFs As HTML

Last month I wrote about an easy way to view those pesky PDF documents in many mobile browsers. That method used a bookmarklet that rewrites links to PDFs so that they open in the online PDF to Image converter at view.samurajdata.se.  WapReview reader Serola just sent me another bookmarklet that uses a different online PDF conversion service, pdfdownload.org, which converts the documents into HTML instead  images. With the documents I tried the  HTML representation (image, top) was not  as faithful … Continue reading

UC Browser Version 7 Beta 2 Is Much Improved – But Popular Sites Are Blocked By The “Great Firewall”

There is a major new release of  the UCWEB browser in the works.  It’s Version 7.0 and is already in its second Beta.  The official Beta releases are Chinese only but several users have created English translations and posted them to the UCWEB User Forum. No one seems to have translated the Symbian S60 3rd edition variant of  7.0 Beta 2 yet, so I’m running a Java ME version on my N95, UC Browser 7 Beta 2 Java Script Improvement … Continue reading

The Truth About Opera Mobile 10 Memory Usage

It’s been a long wait but Opera Software today released the first Beta of Opera Mobile 10 for Symbian.  Supporting Symbian S30 3rd and 5th edition devices, Opera Mobile 10 is available  free of charge at opera.com/mobile/next/. I’ve downloaded the new Beta onto my trusty Nokia N95-3, which is  the North America Market version of the original N95, and I am impressed. The first thing I did was run the Acid 3 Test where Opera Mobile scored 100 out of … Continue reading

First Look at the N900 MicroB, Fennec and Droid Browsers

I had a great time at yesterday’s N900 meetup in San Francisco.  It was organized by N Series US‘ Matt Bennet and TnkGrl Mobile‘s TnkGrl and sponsored by Nokia who graciously picked up the bar tab and provided a couple of N900’s to play with. Matt posted some photos of the meet up and Tnkgrl’s video coverage is on her blog. The N900 is a fantastic device that really feels more like a computer than a phone.  Mathew and Tnkgrl … Continue reading

Hands-On With the ATT.NET (Opera Mini) Browser

I spent some time recently playing with the AT&T branded version of Opera Mini that the operator is using as its default browser on at least four new devices.  The Pantech Reveal, released earlier this month, is the  first phone with the new browser. AT&T seemes to have overlooked WapReview again in handing out review units to bloggers so I had to try the Reveal out at my local AT&T shop. The new browser is branded as att.net. Opera’s name … Continue reading

Updated: Mobile Browser Speed Test – Opera Mini 4.2 vs 5 vs Bolt 1.5

Updated: The Google.co.uk speed tests of Opera Mini were run against the mobile version rather than the desktop version as intended. Rerunning against the desktop version of the Google site increased the times recorded for both browsers. Opera Mini 5 went from 2.7 to 6 seconds and Opera Mini 4’s time increased from 2.3 seconds to 3 seconds. The table and graph have been updated with the new values. I’ve run some speed tests on the new Opera Mini 5 … Continue reading

Bolt Browser 1.5 Review – Great Rendering, Copy/Paste, But Still a Few Warts

I’ve been using Bolt’s new 1.5 release for a few days now and here are my impressions. In general Bolt works very well on main phone, a Nokia N95-3.  In fact, this is the first version of Bolt that I consider good enough to use as my main browser. Here are my likes and dislikes. Likes: Excellent page rendering.  Most sites look great in Bolt, fonts are particularly attractive, clean looking and readable.  Unlike Opera Mini (image below, left), italic … Continue reading
