What’s The Best Twitter Mobile Web Client?

Micro-blogging service, Twitter is one of the big successes of Web 2.0  in terms of mine share and number of users, if not profits.  The simple open social network, where content is limited to 140 character status messages,  now has over five million users.  The 140 character limit comes from Twitter’s origins as an SMS service, but Twitter’s elimination of SMS updates in most of the world doesn’t seem to have slowed Twitter down. Most Twitter people (Tweeps?)  seem to … Continue reading

The Third Largest Social Network on the Web Goes Mobile

Quick, what’s the third largest social network (after Facebook and MySpace) in the world based on traffic?   According to both Comscore and Alexa, it’s Hi5, which has 80 million members.  Although it’s based in San Francisco, less than 7% of Hi5’s traffic comes from the US. Available  in 37 languages and dialects, it’s the leading network with Spanish speaking users worldwide and is hugely popular in South America, Africa and Thailand.  Hi5 is also one of the fastest growing large social … Continue reading

Rolling Stone Mobile

It looks like the premier US rock and roll magazine, Rolling Stone launched a mobile site back in June.  I just learned of its existence when it was added to the Oh! Mobile Directory a couple of days ago. The site certainly hasn’t gotten a lot of buzz, I couldn’t find any mention of  it on Technorati or Google Blog Search.  Now that I’ve seen it I can understand why no one seems to have blogged it – the site … Continue reading

Easy Status updates With Ping.fm Mobile

Thanks to Mark Guim at The Nokia Blog, I’ve discovered a neat new mobile tool. It’s Ping.fm’ s mobile site and Mark used to announce his engagement! Congratulations Mark. If you don’t know Ping.fm, it’s a service that lets you simultaneously update multiple social networks. So instead of posting  a Tweet to Twitter and then going to Facebook and any and all the other social networks that you use and updating your status on each one – you just update … Continue reading

Check Your Blood Alcohol With Your Phone

The Century Council, an alcoholic beverage industry group, is sponsoring a free blood alcohol checking site on the mobile web at b4udrink.mobi.  The idea is that before you go out to a party or a night on the town you use the site to calculate your projected blood alcohol concentration.  If the result is over the legal limit of .08 you are warned. if you plan on getting really sloshed by say, downing 10 shots in an hour you will … Continue reading

Play Chess on the Mobile Web

I just discovered a nice mobile site that lets you play computer chess on just about any phone with a mobile browser. It’s called Caramba! and the URL is m.mountmobile.com. When you vist the site it displays a chessboard and prompts you for your move.  Moves are entered using a simplfied form of chess notation  where you specify the from: file and row followed by the to: file and row.  For example “c2c4” means move the piece on file c, row 2 … Continue reading

The Official Wikipedia Mobile

Since the early days of wml-only WAP, Wikipedia’s content has been available in mobile format through a variety of third party sites.   Wikipedia’s “Mobile Access” page lists nine that are currently active plus Wikipedia’s own official mobile site at mobile.wikipedia.org. The official site was launched in June 2007 but is new to me. I’ve been using  Wapedia.mobi since shortly after it launched in 2004. I really like Wapedia.  It’s fast, always up and does an outstanding job of adapting Wikipedia content to … Continue reading

The New Mobile Social Windows Live

Yesterday Microsoft released a completely updated mobile web version of Windows Live. This is a very significant upgrade and deserves a thorough look.  To understand the new mobile version you really need to look at the full-web version of Windows Live.  Microsoft is in the middle of a massive roll-out of a new and revamped Live portal which they have dubbed Windows Live Wave 3.  Wave 3 is all about social networking.  Live users now have a  Profile complete with picture, status-like “personal … Continue reading
