What A Weekend! The E73 Mode Sunset Beach Party

My weekend was rather special.  It all started with an email last Tuesday from Donna at WOMWorld inviting me to fly down to LA to stay in a house right on Sunset Beach and participate in making a video to promote the new Nokia E73 Mode for T-Mobile USA. I had no idea what I was actually getting into but wasn’t hard to accept an offer to get out of San Francisco’s fog for weekend on the beach. I arrived … Continue reading

Amazing Hack – Bejeweled As A Symbian Webapp

If you have a Nokia Symbian S60 3rd or 5th edition phone  you’ve got to try apps.cellz.in/crack/ It’s a game called “Crack IT!“, a  faithful reimplementation of the classic Bejeweled game in HTML and JavaScript that runs entirely in the browser. Playability is excellent on my N95 and there are even game sounds and animated hints showing you potential moves. I had no idea that the much maligned Nokia webkit browser was capable of such a sophisticated user interface and … Continue reading

Ovi Browser, First Look – With Download Links

Nokia’s Beta Labs introduced a Beta of the Ovi Browser Wednesday.  It’s based on the Vision browser from Novarra, which Nokia acquired five months ago. The Ovi browser is a proxy based browser, similar to Opera Mini. It renders and transcodes web pages on a server before sending them to the phone client in a highly compressed format. Nokia claims that the compression reduces web traffic by up to 90%. The Ovi browser supports the Nokia 2700 Classic, Nokia 2730 … Continue reading

Nokia’s QWERTY Trio – Lots of Bang for the Buck

Last night Nokia announced three new moderately priced QWERTY phones that look very impressive. The thing that stands out to me is the amount of advanced functionality Nokia has crammed in at such low price points. There’s the $122 (list) C3 (top left), a  BlackBerry styled 2.5G S40 with WiFI, music player and WebKit based browser.  The $244 E5 (top right) is similar to the $469 E72 but with twice the RAM,  an even better keyboard and a bigger battery. … Continue reading

Here Come The Cheap Smartphones

Smartphone market share has been steadily rising for the last few years and I think that the growth rates are about to turn exponential. I’m not alone in this belief,  Nielsen predicts that smartphones will outsell feature phones in the US by the end of next year.  The main impediment to smartphone growth is cost.  Even in developed countries many purchasers balk at the average $400 that a typical smartphone commands.  But that’s changing thanks to open source smartphone OSs … Continue reading

Nokia N900 First Impressions

Nokia’s WOMworld has sent me a Nokia N900 to review. Over the next week or two, I intend to cover this groundbreaking device in depth, focusing first on the N900’s Web browsing capabilities using the built in MicroB browser plus Firefox Mobile and any other third party browsers I can find. I’m not sure how long I get to keep the N900 but if I have time I’ll also highlight Web apps that are particularly useful on the device and … Continue reading

WOMWorld’s Mobile Friendly Redesign

Nokia’s WOMWorld received a redesign last week. Gone are the dozens of static product images which slowed pge loads and were only interesting the first time you viewed the site. The new layout is lighter, cleaner looking and loads much faster. A nice side effect of the redesigns is that WOMWorld is now available in a mobile friendly version, created with Crowd Favorite’s WordPress Mobile Edition. WOMWorld is a news aggregator that pulls together the latest news and opinions about … Continue reading
