Nokia CEO calls the N900 “the best browser device ever” Is It?

At the Nokia World keynote today, Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvou (OPK) called the N900 the “best browser device ever”.  Strong words and clearly aimed at the iPhone which is often said to have the best mobile browser. I’m really hoping that OPK is right as I don’t consider the iPhone’s browser all that great. It’s OK, with pretty good rendering and JavaScript support and it’s easy to use.  I don’t even mind that it doesn’t support Flash, personally I wish … Continue reading

Nokia, Go Green and UCLA’s New App Tracks Your Personal Environmental Impact

This morning I participated in a Q&A secssion with Martin Gutierrez from the Go Green Foundation, John Shen from Nokia Labs, and Jeff Burke and Mark Hansen from UCLA about PEIR (Personal Environmental Impact Report), an environmental initiative by UCLA researchers that Nokia and Go Green are funding. PEIR is an application for Symbian OS 3rd Ed, Windows Mobile 6 and soon Android handsets. It measures your impact on the environment by using location data uploaded from your phone to … Continue reading

Java Verified Not An Ovi Store Requirement After All!

At S60Blogs, which is published by Nokia, Aleksi Uotila has clarified that Java Verified certification is NOT a requirement for Java ME applications to be accepted in the Ovi Store.  Apps must still pass Java Verified test criteria and do need to be signed with a Verisgn or Thawte certificate, but testing by an independent test house while recommended, is not required.  Nokia will apparently do the testing themselves at no charge to the developer. There’s a discussion of what … Continue reading

Nokia N900 – It’s a Phone Not a MID

There’s one handheld device electronic device that I use quite a bit that’s not a mobile phone, it’s a circa 2003 Sharp Zaurus C860 (image below).  This Japanese market-only device was sold as a PDA but is in fact a mini-notebook.  It runs a Linux kernel with a QT user interface. Easily converted  to English it’s also a hacker’s dream with wide open hardware and software. I use mine for mobile blogging at events and while traveling. The Zaurus has … Continue reading

Nokia Beta Lab's New Mobile Site

Nokia Beta Labs. which offers often useful, bleeding edge applications and services for Nokia phones finally has a mobile site. It used to be a pain navigating the full version of Beta Labs with a mobile browser, even a capable one like the WebKit based browser on S60 3rd editon (and a couple of S40) models. With the “Services” browser on mainstream Nokia handsets, forget about it! The new mobile site is very complete and highly usable. It has the … Continue reading

Updated: 17-Apr-2009 Voice conferencing information added. Nokia has entered the online collaboration space with a Beta Labs offering called Easy Meet. Meetings can be add-hoc or … Continue reading

Ovi App Store Presentation in Mt. View Today

I’m going to an Ovi App Store presentation today in the Silicon Valley.  I’m hoping to learn more about the program; how it will work for developers, what the store will look like for users on different devices, timeline for rollout, etc. What I’ve heard: Both free and paid apps will be accepted Initially the store will be available on the N97 only, eventually it will be extended to most S60 and S40 devices. Users can pay with a credit … Continue reading

CES Impressions – Palm, Nokia, Skype

I’m not actually AT CES but I’ve been following it on the blogosphere.  The big mobile announcement is of course the Palm Pre.  It’s the first device running the  long awaited (and twice delayed) Linux based, next generation Palm platform, which is called WebOS rather than Nova.  Very iPhonesque in appearance,  but with a slide out QWERY keyboard, the Pre features a multi-touch UI.  The few people who’ve been allowed to play with it have  found the user experience be … Continue reading
