Google Latitude – This is Big!

Last month Google killed four of their mobile services (Jaiku, Notes, Dodgeball and the iPhone and Android specific variants of iGoogle) and I was starting to have doubts about the search and advertising giant’s commitment to mobile. I shouldn’t have doubted, on Monday Google rolled out Tasks for Mobile, and today launched a brand new service, Google Latitude. Latitude adds location tracking to the Google Maps mobile application and to iGoogle on the desktop.  You can track yourself and anyone … Continue reading

FriendFeed To Go

It’s not new, but I just discovered this mobile FriendFeed client.  It’s called FFtoGo and the mobile URL is fftogo.com.  It wasn’t developed by FriendFeed but is the creation of Benjamin Golub. He was later hired by FriendFeed but FFtoGo remains independent. The code for FFtoGo is open source, there’s even a link to the source repository at the bottom of each FFtoGo page. If you aren’t familiar with FriendFeed (FF), it’s a service that lets you roll up the … Continue reading

New Carnival of the Mobilists

Be sure to check out the latest Mobilist’s Carnival. It’s at All About Iphone.net where Steve Litchfield of The Smartphones Show and 3-Lib fame is making a surprise appearance as guest host. There’s a lot of new and hot stuff this week including first looks at Nokia’s 5800 and N79  and coverage of the recent “Future of Mobile” conference. There are also product reviews of the T-Mobile G1, “FastLane Street Racing” for the iPhone and my own examination of the … Continue reading

Opera Mini 4.2 Full Release and Android

Opera Software announced the production release of Opera Mini 4.2 today.  The new release, a minor upgrade from 4.1, is largely unchanged from the 4.2 Beta launched two weeks ago.  It includes bug fixes, the addition of Cyrillic language characters to the browser’s “small” font and a version of Opera Mini 4.2 for the T-Mobile G1 Android phone. Compared to 4.1, 4.2 adds: Skins: Change Opera’s look using predefined schemes. Improved Performance: a new US based server farm increases performance … Continue reading

148th Carnival of the Mobilists at Mopocket

There’s a new Carnival of the Mobilists posted at mopocket.com.  It’s election day in the US and this week’s Carnival host, Justin Oberman has given his carnival an election theme. Hopefully, this will serve to remind US readers to be sure to vote today.  In keeping with the theme, Little Springs Design’s Barbara Ballard contributed a piece on the (un)usability of touchscreen voting machines. There are some great posts in this week’s Carnival including a couple of new takes on … Continue reading

How Big is the Android Phone?

Engadget has published a series of photos from a Chinese forum of what is almost surely the HTC Dream  in T-Mobile livery.  This is the Android phone which T-Mobile US is supposed to launch before year end.  The pictures show the same design as other recent leaked shots of the device. Up to now none of the pictures I’ve seen of the Dream have showed it in enough context to really judge it’s size. This has lead to some reports … Continue reading

MyTreo’s Palm OS App Store

When I was a Palm OS user, MyTreo used to be one of my favorite Palm news, review, download and discussion sites. For several years MyTreo had a mobile version of their forums created with Simple Machine Forum’s (review) built in mobile support, but the rest of the site was a bit less mobile friendly. I don’t have any Palm OS devices anymore and hadn’t visited MyTreo in quite awhile. I was pleasantly surprised when I dropped by the site … Continue reading

MSN Mobile Video Update

A few days ago I wrote about Microsoft’s launch of MSN Mobile Video.  It’s a nice service with thousands of fresh, interesting clips from the full-web MSN Video library.  Unfortunately when I visited the site with a couple of video capable phones, the Nokia N95-3 and Motorola Z8, I got the message “We currently do not support Video on your device“. From that, I assumed that the site only offered videos in Windows Mobile format and suggested that if Microsoft … Continue reading
