Opera University Tours

Yesterday I went to a talk on HTML5 that Opera Software presented at San Francisco State University as part of its University Tours program. There were about 30 other attendees, almost all of them students. Opera’s Anne van Kestern was the main speaker who spoke on HTML5 which is now a draft W3C standard and has partial support in all the major browsers except IE. HTML5 has a lot of cool stuff like the open standards video player built into … Continue reading

Mobile Transit Info For Ottawa

Ottawa’s transit agency, OC Transpo, recently launched a mobile transit site at octranspo.mobi.  The mobile site is being promoted with a prominently placed ad on the agency’s full web site that links to a page with a description of the service and instructions for it’s use. The instructions seem to be targeted at people who have never used the mobile web.  The mobile site itself is intuitive enough that most users should have no trouble using it without having to … Continue reading

Mobile BlackBerry Forums

My Boost Mobile Motorola i855 recently died and I picked up an old Blackberry 7100i for $35 on eBay to replace it.  This is my first Blackberry so I needed plenty of help in figuring out to set it up to synchronize with Outlook and to find and load compatible applications.  Fortunately there are a huge number of BlackBerry resources on the net. A little Googling and I found everything I needed.  My contacts, calendar and notes are now synchronized … Continue reading

Vanguard Fund’s Mobile Site

Vanguard Funds is a large US mutual fund house specializing in no-load, low cost index funds.  I like the company but I’m disappointed by their mobile site at vanguard.mobi (you will need a mobile browser to see the mobile version). There isn’t much content and usability is not as good as it could be. Vanguard.mobi can be used by anyone, whether they have a Vanguard account or not, to view the current value of four major US market indexes and … Continue reading

Sasko Flour’s Award Winning Recipe Site

The I Love Mobile Web Awards were handed out at last month’s Mobile Web Europe Conference in London.  The awards were sponsored by dotMobi and were judged by a panel of industry representatives. I generally agree with the panels choices, many of the winners were sites I’ve review favorably in the past including APNews, MocoSpace, Taptu, Kizoom and Zagat. One winner that was new to me was Sasko Flour (saskoflour.mobi).  It’s a recipe site from South African flour miller Sasko … Continue reading

Opera Mini Bookmarklets Update

Bookmarklets are a great labor saver when browsing the web, both on a PC and with a mobile.  They are little snippets of JavaScript. With a bookmarklet stored in a browser toolbar button  or an Opera Mini Speed Dial, a single click can do all sorts of useful things like adding the current page’s feed to an RSS Reader, posting its URL to social bookmarking services or translating the page to a different language A while ago I wrote about … Continue reading

Perezhiton Mobile

Celebrity gossip blog Perezhilton.com dubs itself “Hollywood’s Most Hated Web Site”.  The site is loaded with photos and descriptions of celebrities acting dumb and looking bad.  Perez’ catty remarks and the crude captions he adds to most of the photos certainly give the site a unique flavor. The guy just loves to dig up and dish dirt on the rich and famous and it seems to have worked out very well for him. At least it has if  legal fees … Continue reading
