iPhone iGoogle Now Works in Skyfire, Opera Mini, S60 Webkit

When I covered Google’s resurrected IGoogle for the iPhone, I complained that Google’s overly aggressive browser detection and redirection  was blocking users of other advanced mobile browsers like S60 Webkit and Opera Mini from the site. Today, I noticed that Google seems to have made a subtle change to the way it handles unrecognized and unsupported browsers. It’s now possible to force the advanced mobile version to be delivered to any browser.  Visit google.com/m/ig?uipref=6 to try it. You need to … Continue reading

Bolt Beta 3 Browser Review

I’ve been using the new release of Bolt (V 1.04, aka Beta 3) for about a day now and I’m quite impressed.  This release represents a significant upgrade.  The new support for bold and italic fonts, file uploading  and copying text from web pages is particularly welcome. Bolt and italic support may seem like a small thing but it makes for a big improvement in the appearance and readability of many sites. Of all the server assisted Java based browsers … Continue reading

New Opera Mini Bookmarklets – Ping this! and Copy Page Text

I’ve added several new bookmarklets to the Tools section of the Opera Mini Bookmarklets page at o.Yeswap.com.   If you aren’t familiar with bookmarklets they’re JavaScript snippets that live in a browser bookmark’s URL field. They are sort of a lightweight version of FireFox extensions.  Bookmarklets can do all sorts of clever things like changing the color of all the links on a page, displaying site cookies or HTTP headers, translating the page to a different language or posting a link … Continue reading

New Opera Mini Bookmarklets

I’ve added four more bookmarklets to the Opera Mini Bookmarklets page at o.yeswap.com.  They were submitted by Lucian, a  reader and regular contributor to Wap Review.  Bookmarklets are bits of JavaScript code stored in a browser bookmark.  When you launch a bookmarklet  it typically does something with the  current page like highlight all the links, display the page’s cookies or Page Rank or subscribe to the current site’s RSS feed in Google Reader or Bloglines. It used to be pretty … Continue reading

Posted From My Phone

I’ve been experimenting with writing some of my posts using only my phone. I think I’ve come up with a set of tools that make it possible for me to create well formatted blog posts using either my BlackBerry 7100i or Nokia N95. Wap Review is a WordPress blog and up through WP 2.5 I was actually able write posts and moderate comments with Opera Mini using just the standard WordPress administrative screens. For version 2.7, WordPress completely redesigned the … Continue reading

Samsung Instinct – Opera Mini Canada Workarounds

Last year I blogged about the Samsung Instinct, a CDMA touch screen feature phone that superficially resembles the iPhone, and the problems that users where having running Opera Mini and other third party Java applications on it. The issue was that the JVM on the Instinct was missing the Java ME LCDUI package which is the way that Java applications create user interface components like textboxes. This meant that was no way to enter text into any text fields in … Continue reading

Can’t Download Opera Mini? Here’s Some Help

This is the fifth in a series of Opera Mini Tips and Tricks posts.  This one covers the situation where you get an error trying to download Opera Mini.  The Opera developers have gone to a lot of trouble to make Mini a generic Java ME application that will work on as many phones as possible.  Most of the time installing Opera Mini is simply a matter of visiting mini.opera.com with your phone’s built-in browser, clicking the download link and … Continue reading

Carnival of the Mobilists #163 at Golden Swamp

This week’s Carnival of the Mobilists (COTM) is hosted by Judy Breck at Golden Swamp.  Judy’s not only the host this week, she’s also the dynamo that keeps the Carnival running smoothly with a new edition appearing every Monday. She schedules hosts, reminds each week’s host when it’s their turn,  promotes the Carnival on the COTM mailing list and on Forum Oxford and maintains the Carnival’s website.  Thank you Judy for your great work, you have made the COTM one … Continue reading
